WGCs are known for OMGs. But this one felt different. On a Sunday that saw letdowns, meltdowns and amazing comebacks, Abraham Ancer was the last man standing after winning the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational on the second playoff hole. It was Ancer’s first TOUR win in his 121st start.
“This is surreal,” Ancer, 30, said. “I thought I left so many shots out there on the back nine, but you never know. Golf is crazy.”
So was Sunday. Harris English had a two-shot lead to start the day, but that was gone after the first hole. Bryson DeChambeau appeared to be in the driver’s seat, but he shot 41 on the back nine.
Neither made the playoff. Instead, it was Ancer, Sam Burns and Hideki Matsuyama (who shot an incredible 63) who battled it out in extra holes.
Ancer and Burns knocked it close on the second playoff hole, with Ancer draining his putt before Burns’ burned the edge.
Ancer became the fourth player from Mexico to win on TOUR and he earned 550 FedExCup points to vault to No. 6 from No. 18 in the standings.
