There are two Ls in Collin Morikawa’s first name. But there are two Ws on his resume when it comes to major championships.

Morikawa won The 149th Open by two shots over Jordan Spieth after a bogey-free 4-under 66. It’s the second major victory for the 24-year-old Californian, with the first coming in 2020 at the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park.

“I had to tell myself midway through the round to focus on each shot and make sure I was committed over each shot,” said Morikawa, who put a new set of irons in the bag recently. “I put myself in position after nine holes, but there were still nine holes (remaining).” In the end, there wasn’t much to worry about.

Morikawa relied on his already-legendary ball-striking, and he rode a hot putter to distance himself from his challengers. Morikawa played his final 31 holes without a bogey, and it was his second major win in only eight starts in major championship competition, which sets a modern-era record.

The Champion Golfer of the Year also cemented his fifth PGA TOUR victory in only 49 professional starts, and he leapt to the top of the FedExCup standings.
