‘Mike Probert talks Christmas Golf

Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions.
The Christmas Blues

If you are now reading this article it is more than likely Boxing day and all the thrills and spills of Christmas Day will be a thing of the past and I hope that Santa Claus brought you everything you wished for,

If you are a golfer then if you were very good it was a new set of clubs but more than likely a single club, glove, shoes or that new golf ball that adds yards to your drive.

They all have one thing in common you just can’t wait for that next game of golf to use them and to help you walk off the excesses of Christmas Day.

Added to that you are in that ‘twilight zone’ time period between Christmas and the New Year when you just don’t know what to do with yourself and suffering the Christmas blues.

By this stage you have probably fallen out with ‘er in doors’ or are pretty fed up with visiting family who have outstayed their welcome.

The time is right for the ‘Great Escape’ (not the film) so why not get out on the golf course while prices are at their lowest and the courses are not too busy.
Good excuse to try out the Chrissy Pressie and walk off some of that turkey while saving money because all too soon the New Year will be with us long with increased golfing prices.

Take advantage of the deals below that we have negotiated for you.

I take this opportunity to wish all our golfing readers all the best for 2019.

We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.

TPGS at Villamartin 21.12.18

Playing at our home course this week where conditions were very good. The majority got into the spirit of Christmas by wearing seasonal outfits, the best of whom Gordy’ Rudolf’ Brindley winning a prize for his efforts.

Incredibly the 2’s pot with 44 players taking part was NOT won,  this was in part  down to the difficult pin positions on the day,   the 2’s pot now rolls over to next week at the same course.

Nearest the pins sponsored by The Ale House saw winners, Ronnie McCully x 2, Colin Wilson, Bob Kemp and Kevin ‘9 Fingers’ Bird collecting prizes.

It was a day contrasts for our next winners with the player most challenged on the day being Ricky Cowan who scored a measly 11pts,  hopefully  Ricky will receive a couple of lessons from Santa ! Ricky’s better half Jane who won best Lady and a share of the overall prizes with a brilliant 35pts.

Our Guest category saw a couple of new members figuring which is great with Russell Bond  3rd with 28pts, Gareth Davies 2nd with 34 pts and playing close to his handicap of 15 was Mike Greatrex scoring 36pts….well done.

On to our Gold and Silver scores ……third in Silver with 31 was the festive Gordy, second Ian Parkinson with 33 and as mentioned before a great win for Jane Cowan with her 35pts.

Gold saw some regular podium winners with ‘Dodgy’ Declan Crowley signing off his year third with 31 pts, ex Capitano Mr Lee 2nd with 33pts and top of the Christmas Tree with 38 pts was the in form Russell ‘I was smashing it’ Bailey with 38 pts….Happy New Christmas handicap Russ!!!!

Our next event is next Friday 28th December  again at Villamartin with a few places available so please visit our website to register for this and future events.

Lastly on behalf of the Committee we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope Santa brings you all the golf gear you asked for!!!!

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 17.12.18

Hola! y Feliz Navidad

Four teams competed in a 3-2-1 ‘Dusty Bin’ to start our week on Monday. In a closely fought contest, first place, with 86 points (which was only three more than the runners up) went to Joyce McClusky, Nigel Price, Mike Mahony and Peter Wickham.

Thanks also go to Joyce for arranging the prizes for Wednesday’s 2 ball better ball competition. With most players entering into the Xmas spirit and wearing Santa hats or silly jumpers it was Mike Frankish who uttered the immortal words ‘my antlers are broken’!

Some great scores were achieved with Heinz Lei and Nigel Price coming out on top with 46 points. Heinz, with no conscious effort, managed to look exactly like Father Christmas! Hot on their heels, with 45 points, were Pete Dunn and Mike Mahony. Six ‘2’s were recorded and there were also two prizes for ‘nearest the pin’. Our President, Dave Pulling, managed it on the 6th and surprisingly I got closest on the 14th.

There was a fond farewell and ‘adios’ to John (Bonnie Lad) Collins before Friday’s ‘Texas Scramble’. Good luck mate, we’ll miss you. Taking first spot, with a nett score of 63, were Rod Doel, Dave Pulling, Nick Campbell and the evergreen  Reg Akehurst.

Pues, hasta el ano que viene,

Peter Reffell

La Marina Golf Society @ Las Colinas

We arrived at this excellent course to be greeted by an overcast sky and a fierce freezing cold wind. However the afternoon saw the clouds disappear and the sun appear.

The results were dominated by outgoing Captain Elspeth Craig and her better half Alan, Elspeth taking the Silver award with 39 points ,two nearest the pins and two shares of the 2’s pot. Alan took a nearest the pin and a share of the 2’s pot.

The Gold section obviously found the conditions hard going as the winner ,on countback, with only 29 points was John Brastock.

The last NTP was won by Alex Leach and Tim Ruse took the last share of the 2’s pot.

Sadly we heard the the news of the passing of one of our founder members,Eric Edwards who,as a former Royal Marine, sponsored an annual trophy. Our condolences go to his wife June and his family.

Our next meeting is at RODA golf on 10th January 2019, first tee 10.06 at a cost of 40 Euros. List is on the board at the Sports Centre or contact Alan on

San Miguel Golf Society Villamartin December 19th, 2018

Thirty-eight members were joined by 4 guests to take on a course that SMGS used to play regularly but visits less often nowadays. And what a momentous day it was!! Not only one hole-in-one, but two, an occurrence nobody could ever recall happening on a society day before.

The short 9th was the hole that came under attack, with Norman Padmore the first to get his 5 pointer, Mick Roscoe following him in soon afterwards. In place of buying drinks for all both donated significantly to the SMGS charity tin, much appreciated by all. This months tin is going towards a life changing operation for Millie. Please visit and support if you can, there is a golf day at Vistabella on the 29th.

Whilst Norman and Mick were in the prizes in their Category, the best member scores of the day (37 points) were posted by Willie Fenn and Mark Russell-Smith, the only two to beat their handicaps. Russ Bond, one of the day’s guests, scored an outstanding 41 points. Scoring was generally very good, reflecting the excellent condition of the course (with the exception of some overly watered areas on approach lines), especially the excellent greens.

San Miguel Golf Society Villamartin December 19th, 2018

We had 23 players today for a delayed start (frost on the course) including our only guest Graham Wise. It was a fun game with men playing off the ladies’ tees and ladies playing off the men’s tees. Handicaps were adjusted accordingly leading to some interesting changes.

The results were as follows:

1st place Roger Brown with 37 points off 13

2nd place Paul Sankey with 33 points off 11

3rd place Shaun O’Gorman with 32 points off 0

Division 2

1st place Fiona Sankey with 34 points of 45

2nd place Alan Barwick with 34 points off 15

There were three 2s today, John Nicol, Ian Robertson and Mick Connolly.

There were only 61 Balls in the Water today, correctly guessed by a beaming Malcolm Wise.

Our next meeting is on January 8th and is the Captain’s Drive-In. Our new Captain, Bill Pike, will thrill us with his spectacular shot 200 yards plus down the fairway (or so he hopes). Any guest wishing to play, subject to handicap, contact Penny Barden on

El Plantio Turkey Trot

A decidedly wintry Spanish morning, resulting in a 45 minutes delay due to frost, greeted 18 El Plantio 2 members, some dressed in festive gear, for their annual ‘Turkey Trot’.

The idea of the competition is that whatever the game, the winner has first choice of a prize above a certain value, donated by each of the other players with the second player the next choice etc. To avoid the occurrence of a few years ago when one of the ladies received a nice set of screwdrivers, the 3 ladies competed in their own mini game.

Today’s enhanced Joker Competition with nominated Joker holes counting triple Stapleford points rather than double saw serial winner Alistair Douglas win by one point with a triple tie for second spot – the unlucky fourth place being filled by club captain Mike Davies.

Nearest the pins, Hole 1, Bryan Watson, Hole 3, Allen Robinson, Hole 5, Alistair Douglas, Hole 8, Alistair Douglas.

Third Place, Handicap 13, Allen Robinson, 41 points C/B.. Second Place, Handicap 6, John O’Brien, 41 points C/B. First Place, Handicap 7, Alistair Douglas, 42 points.

If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses – the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities.

The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230.

End of year for Celts Club de Golf.

What a fantastic end to our competitive year of 2018.  We had our annual Christmas Hamper competition and Dinner Dance at La Serena, with over 80 participants.  The day was perfect for playing golf and the format, a pairs Texas scramble has proven over the years to be the ideal format for the tournament.

With Camillus on babysitting duty, Philip and Terry had the event running like clock work as is their normal.  Many thanks to the competitions committee for all the work, especially throughout the year.  The course was in fantastic condition prepared to the nth degree.  Well done Wayne and your team.  Jean, Paul and Jose looked after us as usual and we really appreciate your professionalism.

Our presentation was in the clubhouse and the general manager was on hand to cater for our every need.  We were treated to a sumptuous meal which was really appreciated by all those present.

Enhorabuena to all the backroom staff in the kitchen, the waiting staff and Bruno.  The nights entertainment was provided by our very own Jackie Whyte, who had us all up dancing until the wee hours.  It was our largest attendance for our Christmas dinner and the compliments were well received.  Thanks to all those who participated and helped make the night so very special.

Our results on the day were as follows. NTP’s Karl DiMascio , George Thomas, Kjell Mundheim, Bob Smith and Gary Conroy.  We had five hampers in total and the winning pairs were, in 5th John Walsh and Eddie Stapleton 68.2, 4th Kevin Fitzpatrick and Darren Holden 67.8, 3rd  Alan and Rose Walker 67, 2nd Kjell Mundheim and George Thomas 66.6 and the winners with a fantastic 63 Bob Smith and Gary Conroy.
