Golfers put on a bumper weekend in support of Prostate Cancer UK

After Saturday´s great day of golf Sunday evening was the time for over a hundred supporters to put on their glad rags and head out to Las Ramblas Golf Club in support of the charity Prostate Cancer UK.

Whilst mingling on the terrace prior to the meal guests enjoyed a cava reception before moving through to the main dining room where a three course meal with, plenty of beer and wine, was served by a great team of staff.

John Brownless (UK Ambassador for the charity) addressed the group with a short presentation about Prostate Cancer. This was followed by Jim Scott, auctioneer extraordinaire, who encouraged everyone in the room to dig deep for donated memorabilia and golf equipment.

Thanks must go to all the kind people who donated football shirts, UB40 concert tickets, a Cold Play tour jacket and a Titleist Golf Bag amongst other things. Thanks also to those who generously bid on the items, helping to boost the funds even more.

The auction was followed by a raffle where we must again thank the numerous kind people who donated prizes and purchased tickets

Following a drumroll we then had the announcement of the total amount raised during three days of magnificent efforts by a multitude of supporters, a wopping 7176 € which was immediately handed over PC UK. Quite rightly the announcement was met by rapturous applause (and a few tears), a huge community effort.

What a pity that the charity doesn’t have an arm in Spain so that the money could stay in the country where it was all raised, but with many expats still choosing to travel back to UK for treatment, and with even more of us having relatives that have been directly affected by the disease, in one way or another we will still all benefit wherever we reside.

Thank you to those who supported the fundraising efforts hardly seem enough, but acknowledgements need to go to the following:

Debbie & Dave Euronics Blue Lagoon, Gavin Albatross Golf, John Brownless Prostate Cancer UK,  Alison & Trevor PJ Rental Cars, Richard Morgans No Grow Grass, Simon Williams The Hub Sports Bar, Adrian Rudge, Joaquin & Robin Vista Bella Golf, Alberto & Staff Las Ramblas Golf, John Khan Heatwave Promotions, Jeanette & Dave Gossip Bar Rioja, Richard Welcome Estates La Finca , John Galaxy Golf, Bob Chambers & Team Lighthouse IFA, Drivers Bar Villa Martin, Dave´s Coaches, Yvonne WH Travel, Manisha Indian Restaurant, Market Street San Miguel, Tiger Feet La Fuente, Gleam Team Property, Chemies Lounge Villa Martin, Maria & The Pink Ladies, Spain Property Shop La Fuente, Ken & Aileen, San Miguel GS, Crystals La Fuente, Team Scotland, The non-golfing ladies who helped on Saturday and Sunday AND anyone else we may have missed (sorry)

Prostate Cancer is the third biggest cancer killer in the UK which is why it is so important to raise funds and awareness on the Costa Blanca. We want all golfers to be aware of the disease which kills one man every 45 minutes in the UK. “That’s six men across the average round of golf,” said James Beeby, Director of Fundraising for Prostate Cancer UK.

“Golf is a hugely important audience for us given the average age of men who play the game and sadly prostate cancer is not out of bounds for many of them.

“From tee to green and in the clubhouse afterwards, we want to tackle this issue head on and make sure more men take responsibility of their health – and play a part in saving lives as well.

“We know this is a disease that exists in every golf club, whether that’s in the UK or Spain and there is no doubt that by holding golf days like this, golfers like John and the other members of local societies will play a valuable role in making sure golfers know their risk of prostate cancer, and raise money to fund research.”

Pego golf society “three score accumulator” at Oliva Nova

On the morning when we were due to play golf at Oliva Nova, we were treated to a wonderful day of warm sunshine and gentle breezes to play golf. It was really millionaires golf, with the course in pristine condition, the fairways greens and the rough in perfect condition.

We had 38 players for this competition, with only two guests and they were Graham Bone and Stephen Fidgett. They were both warmly welcomed by our Captain for 2018, namely David Phillips.

In the competition, the results were as follows:- –

1st Place was Michael Connolly, Graham Bone, Peter Cornes and Tricia Chapman all of whom scored 122 points, which was a great result for them.

2nd Place was Penny Barden, Paul Sankey, Simon Fox and Mr Ghost all of whom scored 117 points

3rd Place was.-  Terry Moore, Bill Sykes, Alan Simpson and your friend Mr Ghost again who scored 114 points.

Nearest the pin at Hole No 5 with their second shot was Malcolm Cannon with 1.91 meters,  and at hole 16, nearest the pin was Graham Bone with 1.90 meters.

There was only one two scored today, and that was from Graham Bone, so a great Pego debut for Graham Bone today, walking away with three of the prizes.

The “Balls in the Water” competition, was won today by Bill Pike, and the amount of balls in the water this week was a meagre 68 .

In the match play, the tie between Roger Miller and Russ Peters, resulted in an overwhelming win for Russ Peters by 6/4

In the other match John Guest defeated Colin Foster by 2/1

Congratulations to both winners in the match play.

Next week, we have the much admired “Copa de Escocia” a medal, and a Major Trophy for Pego Golf Society so should you want to join us at Pego, please contact Penny Barden  at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com, and we would love to see you.

Malcolm Wise, Social Secretary

Almost 5000 euros for Prostate Cancer following charity golf day

What a tremendous turn out of men & women on Saturday, some travelling especially from the UK, to support Prostate Cancer.

Joaquin & his team at Vista Bella have assisted enormously, along with Robin and the staff in the clubhouse, who made sure that all golfers were fed and watered before and after their busy golfing day!

Following registration Richard Morgans from No Grow Grass set up a putting competition to get the day started. 100 € was presented to the best score. Adrian Rudge then spent some time conducting a golf clinic, the consensus being that it was an extremely valuable session.

23 teams then had a 1.15pm shot gun start with doubling up on Holes 3, 5, 10, 14 &18. It was lovely and sunny, quite hot and at times very windy. There were a few balls that drifted into the sand and the water and the occasional tree got in the way, but otherwise the 92 players had an enjoyable golfing experience.

A huge thanks has to go to all the sponsors of the holes: No Grow Grass, PJ´S Rent A Car, Chemies Lounge, Maria & The Pink Ladies, Ken & Aileen Carine, Gossip Bar, Rioja, Bob Chambers, Spain Property Shop, La Fuente, Welcome Estates, The Hub, Villa Martin, Gleam Team, Casa España, La Siesta

23 teams supported the event, all ghetting off to a shotgun start

Hole 11, sponsored by EURONICS, The Electrical Shop at Blue Lagoon, was a competition hole where golfers paid 10 €  and swung like they´ve never swung before to get a HOLE IN ONE and win themselves a 43″ LG Smart TV – on this  occasion the tv was not won which resulted in 100 € being given to nearest the pin

And on to the winners: First Prize of a Golf Cart Bag and a trophy, sponsored by Euronics, went to Tony Smale and his team, well deserving winners.

Second Prize of a T Shirt and Golf Towel, sponsored by Albatross Golf, went to John Brownless and his team.

Third Prize of a Golf Cap and Box of Balls sponsored by Prostate Cancer UK went to Richard Morgans and his team.

Back at the club house, John Brownless, an ambassador for PC UK, gave the golfers a short presentation. One of the main things that he spoke about, and very much the object of the day’s competition, was awareness. He said that Prostate Cancer can be detected by a very simple blood test (have you booked one yet?)

Thank you so very much to all the golfers and their family and friends, plus all the background helpers. It was a long but enjoyable day with lots of laughs. Thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the raffle. There were over 22 won by participants.

Extra thanks also has to be given to Tony Smale and all the members of San Miguel GS who not only entered 2 teams but also very generously donated their Blob Tin funds of 500 € boosting the day’s total to an amazing 4806 € for the Prostate cancer charity.

Sunday the golfers changing out of their shorts and shirts and into fine attire where they enjoyed a Charity gala dinner at Las Ramblas golf club. A report on the evening’s event plus the final figures will be provided next week.

Thanks again to everyone for their support – it was absolutely tremendous

Pairs better ball competition at La Serena on Wednesday 20th June:

Many thanks to our illustrious President, Mr Barry Butterworth for hosting his annual trophy competition at La Serena. Barry provided all the silverware and prizes and a full capacity turnout demonstrated the esteem in which he is held by the members of the society. Well into his 80’s Barry still plays regularly with us and his trophy is always keenly contested by the membership.

Perfect weather and the course at La Serena being (as usual) in great condition, led to some excellent results. The winners of the 2018 President’s Trophy were Ty Williams and Paul Newman with 49 points, second were Adrian Sinclair and John McCay with 48, third were Bob Gallard and Dave Farrington with 38 and fourth came Ian Price and Danny Scott on 46. Nearest the pins were won by David Archer, Dave Farrington. Gerry Frame and Barry Beale.

The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will roll over to our next game. We have several upcoming games, the details of which can be seen on the calendar of our website. Full details of games will be emailed to all members.

Nearest the pins sponsored by The Alehouse were won by Big Jimmy Gray, Christian Attwood, Rob McDowell, Hans Arvesen and Callum Hitcham.

The best Lady on the day with a great score of 34  was our Secretary,  Liz Sully.

Onto the main categories,  3rd in Silver went  Liz Sully, 2nd Barry (still the loudest player) Mitchell with 36 pts and winning on countback the consistent Bob Kemp also 36pts.

Pego Golf Society Singles Stableford Competition

Played at Oliva Nova on Tuesday 19th of June 2018

On a fantastic summers morning , 41 Pego members set out to play a regular Singles Stableford Qualifier Competition at Oliva Nova Golf Club. The course was in just perfect condition, and by far the best course in the region, as was the weather, making for an excellent game of golf, which was reflected in the scores. The results of the main competition were as follows:-

Division 1

Andrew Harrison with 38 Points, and still maintaining this rich vein of form, playing off 16.1, Donna Green with 36 Points playing off 15.3, Russ Peters with 36 Points playing off 14.9

Division 2

John Nicol with 36 Points playing off 25.2, Jon Brun with 35 Points playing off 20.8, David Phillips with 32 Points, our Captain playing off 31.3

Nearest the pin at Hole No 5 with their second shot was Roger Brown at 1.56 meters, and at Hole 16, the winner was John Guest with 2.33 meters..

The star of the show, and featured in the photograph above was Shaun O’Gorman, who aced his tee shot at Hole number 3, so it was drinks all around in the clubhouse afterwards. Congratulations Shaun on a day to remember

The “Balls in the Water” prize was won today by Kenny Millar  with 98 balls so many congrats to Kenny.

Man of the week, has to go to Shaun O’Gorman with a great “Hole In One” at hole number 3.

Finally in the match play second round, the game between Ian Robertson and Peter Brown, ended with Peter Brown 1 up after 18 holes, and in the everlasting game between Steve Patton and Danny Herron, Steve triumphed after two replays by 4 & 2.

Finally, I would like to thank the management and staff ot Oliva Nova for the help and courtesy shown to members of both Pego and Montgo, during the playing of the Montgo Trophy .

It was appreciated by all concerned. For the record Montgo won by a score of 41 to 39, so the result hinged on one put going the other way, but, sincere congratulations to Montgo on a fine performance and winning the Montgo Challenge for the year 2018.

Next week, on Tuesday 26th of June at Oliva Nova, we are playing a Team Accumulator Competition, so should you want to join us at Pego, please contact Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com, and we would love to see you.

Exceptional opportunity to play Lo Romero on Saturday 30 June 2018

Lo Romero Golf will be holding two tournaments this coming Saturday and Sunday and although the latter competition is fully subscribed the tournament on Saturday still has a number of openings.

Interestingly this might be the one that would interest most casual golfers and visitors because there is no requirement to produce a handicap certificate and neither is it necessary that entrants are federated with the RFEG.

The tournament on the Saturday 30th June is classed as an unofficial tournament, which means that there will be no categories to be competed for, hence no prizes as such.  The idea is for golfers to unite in the name of golf, meet like-minded individuals who share the same interests, have a thoroughly good day at a top class course and participate in the Lo Romero Golf Club celebrations.

The green fee is 45 euro per golfer which presents exceptional value including lunch and drinks plus a one off 10th Anniversary  Welcome  Pack, a snack on the golf course, lots of fantastic gifts which will be given away in the form of Card Draws, opportunities for Longest Drive and Closest to The Pin as well as a chance to win a brand new Volkswagen Roc at Hole No 7 for a Hole In One

To register for the tournament on the Saturday golfers will need to phone Lo Romero Golf on 616 478 869 or 966 766 887 or alternatively by email info@loromerogolf.com, entries close on Thursday 28 June 2018 at 12:00pm

President’s cup competition – La Marina Golf Society

Very warm weather welcomed us back to Lo Romero , as always in immaculate condition, resulting in some heavy scoring , especially from our lady members.

This competition had been won twice in its short history by Sarah McCabe, but this year she had to settle for second place with her 39 points, having been eclipsed by captain Elspeth Craig’s excellent 40 points, helped by two perfect putts from the fringe. In third place with a very creditable 38 points was John Milton.

Nearest the pins went to Garry Garbett, Graeme Buchanan , Sarah Mccabe and Alan Craig.

The 2’s pot was shared by Sarah McCabe (again ) and Garry Garbett.

Prize giving took place during the evening at the la marina sports club when we were served an excellent 3-course meal by Helena and her staff.

Our next meeting is at Roda on July 5th , first tee 10.00 am at a cost of 40  euros with buggy.  List is on the board at the La Marina Sports Centre or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk.
