Players of the La Marina Golf Society had to set alarm clocks to go off before the sun had woken up this Thursday to enable all 23 to depart heading to La Finca for their 9.30am 1st tee time.  By the time we were teeing off the temperatures were into the 20s and well on the way to reaching 30+ by the 18th-hole.

The course was in absolutely perfect condition from tees, fairways through to the greens.   La Finca is a course that is constantly undergoing major facelifts and improvements and deserving of being recognised as one of the most prestigious in the area.

A number of good scores were recorded and apart from the heat very few excuses were forthcoming!

The presentation took place at the Sports Complex, where the Captain, Alan Craig, began by reminding players that Las Colinas, 26th June, and Lo Romero 10th July were available for booking on the Master Scoreboard.

Lo Romero is the 1st of the 4 games that go towards the Summer Cup Competition.  This year, the result will be decided by players’ best 2 scorecards over the 4 games.

Alan continued with the announcement of winners as follows:

  • Nearest the pin on hole 3: No One
  • Nearest the pin on hole 6: Elspeth McDavitt
  • Nearest the pin on hole 13: Paul Saxton
  • Nearest the pin on hole 16: Paul Saxton

Paul Saxton scored the only 2s of the day on the 13th and 16th holes and effectively got two half shares of the 2s pot – no rollover this week – sorry Paul, but at least you get two bottles of nearest pin wine to take home with you as well!

There were two knockout games played today.  Both were in the “Lucky Loser Knockout”.  The match between Paul Saxton and Bill Stobo saw a convincing win for Paul by 4 and 3.

In the match between Alan Craig and Dave Freeman, this went down to the final hole where Alan won by just the one hole.  Alan and Paul both progress to await semi-finalists.

The results of today’s Stableford competition are as follows:

Peter Mills in third place with 36 points (handicap 30),

Paul Saxton in second place with 38 points (handicap 16),

The winner with an excellent score of 40 points (handicap 12) was Juha Jortikka.

Vice Captain Sue Lyall closed the proceedings by having 3 raffle tickets drawn for €20 off next game vouchers – the lucky recipients being Elspeth McDavitt, Gordon Thursfield and Vic Smith.

The next game is for the Founder’s Trophy at Las Colinas, 1st tee at 10.50 with the presentation back at the Sports Complex.  La Marina Golf Society has now been established for more than two decades and this trophy will be an opportunity to remember a number of members who are now no longer with us.

Congratulations to all the winners.
