It’s been more than three years. And the struggles have been evident. But on Sunday, Sergio Garcia dug deep, closed strong, fired a 5-under 67 and found himself in the winner’s circle at the Sanderson Farms Championship. “I think it’s just keep believing, keep working hard, get your mind right,” said an emotional Garcia, whose previous TOUR win came at the Masters in 2017. “I think that my whole team has been behind me trying to help me anyway they can … It’s never easy, and when you’re struggling a little bit it’s always tough. But they stuck behind me and that’s why I love them.” There was plenty of late drama at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi. With Peter Malnati in at 18 under with the clubhouse lead, Garcia had work to do. So all he did was eagle the 14th hole with an amazing second shot to 3 feet, then stick his approach on the 18th hole to 2 feet before tapping it in for a one-shot victory. And oh, he started putting with his eyes closed this week, so that appeared to work pretty well. It was the 11th victory on the PGA TOUR for the former winner of THE PLAYERS Championship, and it came one season after he posted only one top-10 finish on TOUR. Garcia picked up 500 FedExCup points and vaulted 142 spots to No. 4 in the standings.
