The Celts Club de Golf celebrated our Captain’s prize (George Thomas) last Sunday. What a fine turn out we had to honour George. Nerves were jangling for the drive in, but no fear. George took one or two practice swings and dispatched a might drive straight down the middle. The shotgun blasted and off we went in the glorious sunshine.

The competitions committee of Camillus, Alan, Philip, and Terry need to be congratulated for their organisation and the smooth running of all our competitions. Miguel and his team went to great lengths to have the course in the best possible condition on the day, especially when you consider the difficulties suffered during the last couple of months. Thank you to Jean and Jose for producing the results. Thank you to Vanessa, Gloria, Marijose and all the catering team.

The presentation of prizes we celebrated in El Meson del Prado in San Miguel. Muchísimo gracias a Juan, Lola, Marcus, Gala, Valentine y todos los camareros. To our very own Jackie Whyte, many thanks for a lovely evening. Jackie performed a repertoire of easy listening tunes mixed with, up- beat classics that had us all up dancing the night away. Our Captain came dressed in a tartan kilt from his family clan, which really added to a lovely occasion. Just a little anecdote, never to be repeated I promised George. On hole 13, colour blindness or something like that required me to apply a two-shot penalty for playing from the wrong marker, ouch! Then to add insult, yours truly had a fresh air from 2 inches on the next hole, what a palava.

Results of the day, the NTP’s. Clive Jenkins, Chris Daw, Denis McCormack, and John O’Brien. Please do not put your name on the nearest the pin if you do not intend to collect the prize. It prevents another from winning, who will attend the presentation. Nearest the Captains Drive, Eddie Wall. Cat IV, Kevin Fitzpatrick 72, Steve Formby 76, and Paul Raffel 79. Cat. III. Richie Heaton 74, Billy Thomson 77, and George Thomas 80. Cat II. Eddie Wall 75, Stuart Bulling 76 and Wernfried Stuhlpfarrer 77. Cat I. Camillus Fitzpatrick 73, Alan Walker 75, and John O’Brien 78. The gross was won by Denis McCormack 81. Second overall with 71 shots Gary Conroy, and the winner of the Captain’s Prize 2023 Pavla Serakova with 71. Well done to all the winners and congratulations and to all those who played and attended the evening meal. We had a great day’s golf and a lovely evening; we are after all a golf club that really enjoys the social aspect of golf. Don’t forget our charity day the 6th of July, it is for members only. Any donations can be given to Camillus, Denis, or John. Monies raised on the day will be forwarded to AECC.
