A wild week was capped off with a victory by Patrick Cantlay, who outlasted Collin Morikawa on the first playoff hole at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide.
Weather delays and a course renovation seen for the first time by the players led to an interesting week, which concluded with a dramatic win by Cantlay in damp conditions late Sunday. “I started off a little shaky, but hit a lot of quality shots coming in,” Cantlay said.
“It felt the same when I won a couple of years ago. I felt calm and collected.” Cantlay won the event for the second time in three years and earned his fourth PGA TOUR victory. Before the playoff, the critical moment came on the 17th hole when Cantlay ran in a 24-foot birdie putt just before Morikawa drained a 12-footer for par moments later.
The two headed to the 72nd hole tied for the lead and made par to force the playoff. Cantlay moved to No. 1 in the FedExCup standings after picking up 550 points.
Jon Rahm had a six-shot lead after the third round but had to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.
