Five days. Seven matches. Countless clutch shots. And on Sunday, Billy Horschel was the last one standing.
Horschel fought through a grueling week in windy conditions at Austin Country Club to win the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play for his first WGC title.
He defeated Victor Perez in a morning semifinal match before dispatching local favorite Scottie Scheffler 2 and 1 in the final. “There is so much emotion and so many turns of the tides,” Horschel said. “It was one of those days when I didn’t play very good. I didn’t hit it very good and didn’t feel good with my swing. So I just grinded it out.”
Horschel, 34, who won the FedExCup title in 2014, earned his sixth PGA TOUR win and 550 FedExCup points, moving him up 38 spots to No. 7 in the standings.
Matt Kuchar defeated Perez in the consolation match.
