GIRLS STEAL THE LIMELIGHT ON VALENTINES DAY CUP

Warblers descended upon a rather tired looking Bonalba but it is that time of year when courses never look their best but Great Bunkers full to the brim with good sand and the weather was wall to wall blue skies.

As Valentine’s day is mainly for ladies it was two who shone through with great scores, top of the list was that lady who walked away in 2018 with trophies galore Rosemary Edwards with a great net 68 taking the first trophy of the 2019 season “The Valentines Cup”

In second spot no guessing who that lady golfer was as at present you cannot keep her down and avoiding a cut Susan Harrison 2 shots back on 70

Third was David French on 72 who also took the prize for the lowest gross score with an 81 and keeping his wine cupboard well stocked took nearest the pin on hole 11

4th spot was Arthur Sullivan also on 72 but having a higher handicap

5th was Denis Coe on 75

6th was Fred Colley on 76

Other nearest the pins was an amazed Malcolm Robinson on hole 4 as he had no idea where his ball finished but only a meter from the hole.

On hole 14 was our lady of the day Rosemary Edwards

Hole 8 was Paddy Kenmore

The two challenge was rolled over as no twos were recorded.

The football card was won by Fran Dickenson with Aston Villa welcome back to Fran and Tony Dickinson.

As stated, the course was not at its best but the 24 Warbles who attended thoroughly enjoyed the event even though it was a medal.

Our next event is on the 27th  at Galiana for a Texas scramble with a first tee of 10.30 registration 9.45am

Guests are very welcome and need to book through a member of direct to registration on mjt@stylepms.com or ring 639242896

The Kincavel Quaich

Orba Warblers Golf Society – Wednesday 7th November, La Sella

An early start at La Sella, with a chill in the air on the first tee, but still some of the optimists were wearing shorts and they were proved to be right as it turned into a perfect day for golf which makes it all the more difficult to work out why the scores were so bad.

For the non-warblers who may read this a “quaich” is a small two handled drinking dish from Scotland and it was most appropriate that the winner today was our very own Scottish lass Rosemary Edwards with a score of 35 points and because it was their own sponsored event Bob and Rosemary rearranged the prizes so others could receive a prize. Second place went to Shaun O’Gorman with 33, third was David Knight with 30, fourth place was taken by John Daniels, fifth Mark Gaines, sixth Glynn Braidley, seventh Barbara Pollitt and eigth Peter Gibson.

There were nearest the pin prizes for Shaun O’Gorman, Bob Edwards and two for Dave Knight, the Warbler balls went to Bob Edwards and Glynn Braidley, the football card was won by Dave Knight as well and he generously donated it to charity.

The semi-final of the singles knock-out between Mark Gaines and Peter Gibson was played today and Mark finally overcame Peter on the last hole to move to a final confrontation with Steve Cliffe. We are extremely grateful to Bob and Rosemary Edwards for sponsoring today and presenting such a large array of prizes, a competition to remember.

Next week we will be at Oliva Nova on Wednesday the 21st November, where we will compete for the “Paul Kelleway Plate” the first tee is at 10.56 so you need to be there for 10.00. Guests are always welcome with a current handicap certificate. For more information or to book in contact Michael Taylor on 639242896 or “E” mail the Fixtures Secretary and the Vice Captain.

Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 29th August, La Sella

A nice early start for a change meant we were at least cool for about an hour till the sun  arose and warmed us up, it would have been better to have played the course the other way round then we would have had the shade from the trees on the old course when the sun was at its hottest.

It was great to have Roy Booth back with us after his spell of ill health and he made it the way round for 18 holes, hopefully we will see more of him, it is also nice to see Mickey Badain with us for his annual visit but I do not know who told him he is allowed to win when he is here, well played Mickey taking top spot with 36 points, in second place was the in form Michael Morley with 35 and third place went to Steve Cliffe with 33, clinching the last place on the podium was Paddy Kenmore with a blistering back nine of 24 points to finish with 31.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Derek Gray on the 5th and Michael Morley on the 15th (6th Green course), Derek also received a ball for the two.

Next week, Wednesday the 12th September we are at La Sella again for the Charity cup, the first tee will be 08.40 so you need to be there promptly at 08.00 to book in. Guests are always welcome with a current handicap certificate. For more information or to book in contact Michael Taylor 639242896.

Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 22nd August, Villaitana Levante

Wednesday provided the opportunity for our long awaited return to this very popular golf course, it is usually presented really well except for the bunkers which have been a bone of contention for a long time, if you are going to install that many bunkers on a course then at least maintain them in a playable condition.

Our winner today must have avoided the bunkers as his 43 points score will attest to, well played Michael Morley what a great score, in second place, the ever present Malcolm “not beaten on count-back this week” Monti with 39 points nudged out Fred Cooley on count-back and in fourth was David French with 37, there were a plethora of good scores today and we went down to thirteenth place before we left the 30’s. It was extremely good to see Glyn Walters returning to the fold (scoring 36) and Mickey Badain rejoining us for the Summer.

Today was Michael Taylor’s birthday and he kindly sponsored the nearest the pin prizes which were won by, David French on the 3rd and the 7th, David Knight got closest on the 12th and Michael Morley on the 14th. There were no “Two’s” this week but the greens are notoriously tricky on this course.

On Wednesday the 5th September we will visit El Bosque, the first tee will be 10.00 so you need to be there promptly at 09.15 to book in. Guests are always welcome with a current handicap certificate. For more information or to book in contact Michael Taylor 639242896.

Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 20th June, Bonalba Cup

This weeks match saw the Orba Warblers competing for the Bonalba Cup one of our major trophy events, there was a strong field of 30 golfers who braved the increasing temperatures of  this warmer weather. There were two guests, Duncan and Tricia Edwards and it was great to welcome back David Evans into the group.

The main event was won by Derek Gray with 36 points helped in no small way by a three on the Parr four 16th providing him with a not inconsiderable lift of 5 stableford points, second place was taken by the ever present Malcolm Monti with 36 points also but unsurprisingly beaten on countback by Derek on the last three holes, Chris Williamson took third place with 35 points and the last three places were also decided on countback as 34 was the popular number on the score cards of Robin Wheatley, Michael Morley and Fred Cooley.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Robin and Fred and there were Warbler balls for Robin, Roy booth, Paddy Kenmore and Chris Williamson.

There were two Match play knock out games played today and advancing to the next round are Arthur Sullivan with Fred Cooley having beaten Michael Morley with Peter Gibson and Steve Cliffe overcame David Brown on the last hole.

Our next game will be a Yellow ball competition at Alenda on Wednesday the 4th July, the first tee will be 10.30 so you need to be there for 09.45 for registration. For more information or to book in contact Michael Taylor 639 242 896.

Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 21st February, Bonalba

It was a cold and wet start to our day at Bonalba this week for our second assault on the annual “Eclectic”. We were very fortunate to have a shotgun start which is a bonus and given that we all had buggies we were able to get to our respective starting tees with ease.

There was a good turnout for what is quite an early start, some having to get up at 06.30 to arrive by 09.00, nice in the summer but not so nice in the winter.

Division one was topped by the Michael Taylor with a creditable 38 points off 22, in second place was Malcolm Monti with 37 points off 17 and in third was the inform Fred Cooley with 34 off 14. Division two saw Arthur Sullivan return to some sort of form with 38 off 29, followed by Peter Gibson and David Edwards both with 34 points, Peter taking second on countback. There were two nearest the pin prizes on hole 4, Michael Morley and on hole 14, Rosemary Edwards, John Stent and Derek Gray both achieved “two’s” for a Warbler Ball.

Next week, the 7th April, we are at El Plantio, for a 12.02 start you need to be there for 11.15, guests are always welcome, contact Michael on 639242896.

Orba Warblers Texas Scramble La Sella

Texas Scramble La Sella – Feb. 7

A lower turn out for Orba Warblers this week at La Sella as buggies were not allowed due heavy rain the night before. 16 members hastily re-formed 4 teams and headed out on to very wet fairways for our Texas Scramble. The greens however, were as usual quick and deceptive. We were lucky with the weather – although it was cold there was no wind. However, we were not so lucky as one of our members slipped and fell and had to be taken off the course. Fortunately there was no serious injury.

The winners of the day were:

Vicki Loeber Net : 64.2

Margaret Hoare, Steve Cliff, John Brabury

We had two guests playing this week – John Bradbury and Steve Longbottom.

The Football went to Wendy Sullivan filling in the last slot on the card with Falkirk.

Next week, February 21 we are are at Bonalba. First Tee Time 9:52am so please arrive by 9:00am for registration. Guests are welcome subject to space availability and Current Handicap certificate. To book, please contact Michael Taylor on mjt@stylespms.com or phone 639 242 896.
