Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 21.10.19

Mike Mahony and Olga Douglas had a great start to their week. Having been paired together in our ‘2 ball better ball’ competition on Monday they took the spoils with a tremendous 47 points. Close behind them with a score of 44 points (which would normally be enough to win) were Bryan Neal and the ‘evergreen’ Reg Akehurst.

On Wednesday it was the third and final round of our ‘Championship’ Medal. Winner on the day, with a nett score of 70 was Olga Douglas who was followed home by Trevor Pullyblank with a nett 72. Mike Chapman was in the frame with 73. There were three ‘2’s today going to Dave Pulling, Ron Phipps and Liz Robertson.

Mike Mahony’s and Olga Douglas’s run of form continued. With the best two cards out of the three to count Mike took the overall men’s title with nett 146 whilst Olga came out top in the ladies section, also with 146. Mike only just triumphed over Mike Chapman on countback! Rachel Lee was the ladies runner up with a nett 148.

Wednesday evening was great fun as about 30 of us took part in Richard Connock’s unique interactive quiz night held at his café in La Zenia called Artesano. We would highly recommend this event to all the other golf societies and clubs out there who are looking to hold an entertaining event. For more details contact Richard on WhatsApp to 0044 7872 601731 or email

Our week ended with a 6x6x6. Winners with 87 points were Jan Svendsen, Nick Lee, Yvonne Phipps and Nigel Price. Just one point behind them were Marleen Billen, Graham Murray, Richard Connock (another plug) and the fictional Albert.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 1.7.19

Firstly, apologies for there not being a report for last week however rest assured it’s now back to business as usual!

Monday saw us compete in ‘The Counter Game’. The twist here was that we didn’t know how many of the four scores were to count until reaching the next hole. The ever consistent (but fictional) Albert helped Paul Brown, Joyce McClusky and Benedicte Kruse into 2nd place whilst myself, Bryan Neal, Olga Douglas and Mike Mahony took the glory with 102 points (just 4 points short of our all-time  record).

Terry Field was not present today as we’d sent him off on a scouting mission looking for new members. Look who he found!!! (John Daly the 1995 British Open winner).

Wednesday’s winner of our Stableford was Joyce McClusky with 38 points followed by Paul Brown with 36. The story of the day has to belong to Reg Akehurst, who on the eve of his 90th birthday, took 5th place with 34 points. Is this some sort of record?  If anyone knows otherwise please contact us via our website:

There were two ‘2’s today coming from Richard Connock and Alan Douglas.

Friday and it was a 6x6x6. With a terrific 89 points 1st place went to Olga Douglas, Pete Dunn, Mike Chapman and Mike Mahony. Just one point behind them and taking silver were Ken and Liz Robertson, John Shervell and Harry Howard.

Por ultimo, golfer says to caddy, ‘Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?’ Caddy replies, ‘Eventually sir.’

Las Ramblas Golf Society – Results for w/c 1.4.19

That little rascal, the fictional ‘Albert’, came up trumps again in Monday’s ‘counter game’. Along with Marleen Billen, Paul Brown and Hendrick Oldenziel a score of 92 points was enough to take 1st place.

This time round we had the benefit of knowing how many scores out of the four were to count before each hole was played. Worthy of a mention were Hendrick’s back to back birdies.

Wednesday saw us compete in this season’s 2nd ‘major’ club competition in the form of a ‘2 ball better ball’. Being a special occasion, there were welcome drinks at the half way stage and members were encouraged to bring food and snacks for a buffet afterwards. Someone should probably point out to Ellen Drakesmith that pork pies need to be defrosted and sausage rolls cooked!

Despite a three shot reduction in her handicap over the past few weeks Nora Betts once again found herself on the winner’s rostrum. Together with Maria Oldenziel, our ‘Spice Girls’ took the title with 45 points. So that will be ‘Dutch Spice’, ‘Irish Spice’ and presenting the trophy ‘Old Spice’! Runners up with 44 points were Heinz Lei and Mike Frankish (who scored 41 of them!) They just managed to edge out Pete Dunn and Bernie Stones on countback. Three ‘2’s today, Ellen Drakesmith, Nigel Price and Terry Cullen.

On Friday we played a ‘Joker Stableford’ where two nominated holes were worth double points. Tom Hardie took gold with 44 points and was closely followed by Joyce McClusky, who just missed out with 43. Mike Mahony came in third with 41 points.

Y por ultimo, in the words of Raymond Floyd, ‘They call it golf because all the other four letter words were taken’!

Pues hasta la semana que viene,

San Miguel Golf Society at Roda 8th August, 2018

Ironic, isn’t it?  In the UK a fair weather golfer is one who will only play when the sun is shining.  For our weekly stableford at Roda, twenty three signed up, fewer lined up and it seems  that same sun is to blame for the low turnout.

It was also noticeable that everyone who did show up lingered longer in the cool of the clubhouse before reluctantly heading to the practice ground.  Who needs to warm up when you can break into a sweat simply stroking a few putts?  The first club out here to field a fleet of air conditioned buggies would be on to a sure thing!

Stripey Tigers Nearys, Theo, Robin andMicky

Scoring on the day wasn’t bad overall which is more than can be said for the greens at Roda. Receptive, but some were scarred with sand-covered patches. That and the usual unrepaired pitch marks made long range putting a lottery. The greenskeepers were working hard everywhere else though, so credit to them for presenting the rest of the course in good shape in testing conditions.

Best score of the day honours went to Norman Cahill who won the Gold division with 39 points.  Robin Eastman was the bridesmaid yet again in Gold, and Mike Innes topped the Silver (haired?) division on 36 points, with Norman McBride finishing runner-up in that group.

Biggest grin during the presentations came from Ken “I never win nutt’un” Flaherty who snuck into third place in Silver and then snared the Football draw winnings for good measure.  New member Colin Smith showed his versatility by winning one of the nearest the pin prizes to go with the Abacus award and topped it off with an ‘In it to win it’ bonus.  That’s his annual subs paid back in just one outing!

Best Guests Dave and Mick

Apparently the long-range weather forecast is for cooler climes at Vistabella next week.  Well, that’s what the almost full booking sheet would suggest but there are still a couple of starting times available for late comers.

The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following:

Silver Category: 3rd Ken Flaherty (29), Norman McBride (30), Mike Inns (36)

Gold Category: 3rd Graham Temple (36), 2nd Robin Eastman (36 CB), 1st Norman Cahill (39)

Gold Graham, Robin and Norman

Nearest the pins went to Theo Boelhouwer, Robin Eastman, Colin Smith and Micky Roscoe.

Best guests 1st Dave Exley, 2nd Mick McDermot. Thanks to all our guests for their support on the day.

Colin Smith won this week’s Abacus prize for the lowest number of points.

Our thanks to the staff at Roda for their contribution to the day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website or simply give Tony Smale a call on 628227687. The next three games will be at Vistabella, Lo Romero and Riquelme.
