SULLIVAN AND TAYLOR SPRING TO THE FRONT TO TAKE THE “SPRING TROPHY”

With a late change of course to Bonalba must have suited the players in this weeks Spring Trophy Match pairs better ball event with some great scores.

The winners were Michael Taylor and Arthur Sullivan with 46 points this score was helped by a fabulous 3 for 5 points when Sullivan Chipped from the rough over the bunker and rolled some 40 meters straight in to the hole,” Man did he smile “and from that point onwards there was no looking back.

Second chasing hard on the heels of the winners on 45 points with some excellent play by both members of the team was David Knight and Peter Gibson

Third just one point back on 44 points was John Daniels and Paddy Kenmore

This week we had two 2s from team members of the top groups on hole 4 was John Daniels and Hole 8 David Knight no doubt that this helped their score.

Nearest the pins were Roy Booth on hole 4 with a very difficult pin position this week but narrowly missing a 2, and on hole 14 Fred Cooley who seems be in the frame somewhere each week.

We had 5 guests this week and they were made very welcome and the best team was Michael Grant and Paul Gilbert both receiving a bottle of wine.

The football card was won by Arthur Sullivan with West Brom.

It was great to see the course at Bonalba gradually getting back to normality obviously down to the hard work of the groundsman.

Our next match is at Font De Llop on the 20th March  with a first tee slightly later than normal of 11.30 Guests are welcome please contact Michael Taylor on 639242896 or email mjt@stylepms.com

Warbler Attack on Levante And Poliente

With buggies banned on the Levante course a group of warblers headed for their own game on the Poniente course the remaining 22 players attacking the Lavante course with Vigour.

Levante course

Division 2 players suffering with either sun in their eyes or missed opportunities with the slick greens and low scores except a certain lady who seems to be in a league of her own at present. Sue Harrison lead the way a week ago and again this week was 10 points clear of the second-place spot of Peter Gibson on 26 points and third spot to his utter amazement was Arthur Sullivan on 23 points

Sue scoring a brilliant 36 points no putting problems there then!

Division 1 was a totally different result with some excellent scores David French led the field home with a brilliant 39 points hot on his heals was Dennis Coe on 38 and third spot Glyn Braidley on 37 points on count back

Nearest the pins on hole 3 was guest Alan Fullwood and Malcolm Monti on hole 14

A 2s challenge was up for grabs this week with a charge of 1€ per member to enter this resulted in Denis Coe with 2s on hole 3 and 12 and guest Alan Fullwood on hole 3 both sharing the spoils

The football Card was again undertaken by Margaret Wheatley and yes that’s right her husband Robin taking the pot.

Poniente Course

Several players attacked the course with the overall winner being Malcolm Robinson with 29 points who won on countback from David Edwards one nearest the pin was available which was won by Paddy Kenmore.

Both courses were in excellent condition with fast and difficult greens to read especially if on a downhill lie with the ball often surpassing the distance it started.  The bunkers were very difficult being very wet just under the surface

Prize giving was its usual banter with a Bronze Statue being presented to Wendy and Arthur Sullivan for 16 years hard and loyal work to the Orba Warblers golf society both retiring from there post at the recent AGM. Arthur having headed up every department over that time and Wendy running the social scene twice for a period of years.

Our next match is 20th February at La Sella sponsored by Campbell Lamont first tee at 8.48

If interested in playing, please contact Michael Taylor on 639 242 896 or email mjt@stylepms.com

Orba Warblers Golf Society at Bonalba

Wednesday 16th January, Bonalba Golf Resort

A Medal round at Bonalba drew a larger than expected field for this early in the New Year, but it was another beautiful day weather wise a little chilly at the start but warmed up later. The greens were quite quick and with the contours on some of the greens you could just start the ball and if it did not go in you were facing a longer putt back.

Our division one winner was Michael Taylor with a net score of 73, in second place was John Daniels with a score of 74 and in third was Steve Smith with net 75 and he also carded the lowest gross score. The second division had two spectacular scores on top, Peter Gibson carded a net 66 equivalent to 42 points, he was followed by Rosemary Edwards with a net 68 (40 points), Malcolm Robinson, with net 72, took third place.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Glynn Braidley on the 14th and Steve Smith on the 8th and there were golf balls for Steve Smith and Arthur Sullivan. The final of the Doubles knock-out took place and after eighteen holes they were all square so the match had to be resolved by a putt off where Michael Taylor with Malcolm Monti overcame Mark Gaines with David Edwards, Mark has appeared in both knock-out finals this year and has been runner up in both, disappointing, but a really good achievement nevertheless.

Our next game is at Alicante on Wednesday the 30th January with a first tee time of 10.00 so you need to be there for 09.15 to book in, the Eclectic is at Alicante this year so this will be your chance to set the standard. Guests are always welcome with a current handicap certificate. To enter contact Michael on 639242896 or E mail him and the vice-captain

Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 9th January, La Sella

The first game of the year was at La Sella and at eight o’clock in the morning it was very cold, the course was frosty and in some places quite wet, but being the hardy souls that the Warblers are they just wrapped and got on with it, two of our number were sporting shorts, not sure if that is brave or stupid, but it paid off for them by the time we had finished.

The scores were pretty low resulting in a CBA of -2, I am not sure if that was as a result of the temperature or the slick greens, nevertheless on top this week was David French with 33 points followed by Steve Cliffe with 31 and taking third on count back was Michael Taylor with 30 beating Shaun O’Gorman into fourth. Shaun did not have to worry too much about that as he picked both of the nearest the pin prizes and a golf ball for a two.

The next game is at El Bosque on Wednesday the 23rd January with a first tee time of 10.00 so you need to be there for 09.15 to book in. Guests are always welcome with a current handicap certificate. To enter contact Michael on 639242896 or E mail him and the vice-captain. The society AGM will take place on the 24th January at Javea Golf Club with a start time 10.30.

Orba Warblers Golf Society Turkey Trot

Wednesday 19th December Oliva Nova Golf

The annual Turkey Trot took place at our usual venue, Oliva Nova, this week and the Warblers, complete with Christmas hats but limited to three clubs and a putter took on the course which was in superb condition. Following the golf we all retreated to the BB Grill, alias the “Chicken Shack” for a Christmas get together and some tasty chicken.

As is our way there were prizes from first to twelfth, first prize being an excellent hamper and twelfth an “OXO Cube”, taking top spot was Rosemary Edwards scoring 38 points, a remarkable achievement with the limited clubs, second place went to Shaun O’Gorman also a great result considering his handicap. There were two players on thirty one, Will Evans and Fred Cooley, Will clinching third on C/B, Bob Edwards beat Mark Gaines on C/B both with thirty, Dave Knight just pipped Glyn Walters, next was yours truly followed in the last three places by David Edwards, Barbara Pollitt and Nick Berry bringing up the rear.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Shaun on the 3rd and 6th and Will Evans on the 11th with Bob Edwards closest on the on the 16th, there were golf balls for David Edwards and Will. The society AGM will be held at La Sella Golf on the 24th January, starting at 10.30 and the annual presentation night dinner dance is on the 19th January at El Rodat, Javea.

Our first game of 2019 will be on Wednesday 9th January at La Sella with a first tee time of 08.48, so you need to be there for 08.00 to book in. Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 12th December Alenda Golf

Yet another brilliantly sunny day for the Warblers at Alenda Golf, the course was brilliantly presented, probably the best condition we have encountered this winter and a great deal at the price we paid.

Derek Gray led the group home with an excellent 38 points and a hefty cut for his trouble, Dave Knight came second with 36 points and third place was taken by Michael Morley with 35 who continues to play well despite poor health, the fourth slot went to the ever present Steve Smith with 34 points, no mean feat off 4.3. Fred Cooley and Michael Morley were our nearest the pin winners on the 3rd and 16th and they both managed “two’s” on the 3rd.

Just a quick reminder that the society AGM will be held at La Sella on Thursday the  24th January at 10.00, proposals and nominations should be with the Admin Secretary as soon as practicable. If you cannot make it to the Turkey Trot next week may I take this opportunity to wish you a very merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Our first game of 2019 will be on Wednesday 9th January at La Sella with a first tee time of 08.48, so you need to be there for 08.00 to book in. Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 5th December La Sella

A chilly start at La Sella, only a few hardy members were on the course in front of us, long trousers were the order of the day but a few of the tougher players wore shorts in anticipation of the expected warmer weather and they were proven exactly right.

The golf course front nine has suffered greatly from the weather and at this time of the year it gets little chance to dry out. On top of that the necessary maintenance of scarifying the fairways had been carried out producing a quite unpleasant surface to play off.

A smaller than expected field meant that we would only be playing one division with prizes one to four and in first position with 31 points was Mark Gaines, followed by Chris Hoare scoring 29, Peter Gibson was third with 28 and fourth place went to Arthur Sullivan with 26, I am not sure why the scores were so low unless the state of the course or the early chill had some effect on the players but it resulted in the CBA being -2.

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Arthur Sullivan on the fifth and one of our guests, Bill Diamond, on the fifteenth, unsurprisingly there were no “twos”.

Our final game of 2018 is the Turkey Trot to be held at Oliva Nova on the 19th December, the first tee is at 10.32 so you need to be there for 09.45. We will be playing with three clubs and a putter and don’t forget there is a prize for the best Christmas hat.

Following the game we will going to the “Chicken Shack” for lunch in the usual way, if you and your partner wish to attend the lunch please let Wendy know so that she can book the numbers. Guests are always welcome with a current handicap certificate. To enter contact Michael on 639242896 or E mail him and the vice-captain.

Orba Warblers Golf Society Wednesday 19th September, Bonalba

A full house for our visit to Bonalba Golf this week and a very hot day to boot, many thanks to the sponsors of todays event, Margaret and Robin Wheatley, for the large array of prizes on offer. Bonalba generously reduced the price of the green fee because the seventeenth green was on a temporary.

We were competing in two division this week and also having a chance to improve our “Eclectic” scores, it has to be said that the better scores came from division one this week and leading the division in was Chris Williamson with a fabulous 40 points off 7.7 now reduced to 6.9, second place went to Fred Cooley with 39 off 10.4 now reduced to 9.8 and in third place was Steve Smith with 37 off 4.9 now 4.7.

Division two saw a new name on the top with Nitin Pancholi showing that he is settling in with the Warblers and producing a great score of 38 points off 25.9, second place saw the return of Glyn Walters to the podium again with 35 points and third place went to Howard Carter with 33. There were also prizes for overall tenth and the “unluckiest golfer” that went to John Daniels and Roy Booth respectively.

There nearest the pin prizeswere won by Chris on the 4th and Michael Morley on the 8th with Steve Smith winning a Warbler ball for a two on the 14th. Two knock-out matches were played today and advancing to the next round are, Barbara Pollit, following her defeat of Michael Morley 3 & 1 and Fred Cooley with Arthur Sullivan who beat Robin Wheatley with Paddy Kenmore 2 & 1.

The final game of the “Summer League”, organised by CLG was played last week and the team from the Warblers won a Texas Scramble which means that they have won the league this year.

Our next game is on Wednesday the 3rd October at El Bosque, the first tee will be at 10.00 so you need to be there promptly at 09.15 to book in. Guests are always welcome with a current handicap certificate. For more information or to book in contact Michael Taylor on 639242896 or “E” mail the Fixtures Secretary and the Vice Captain.
