Vistabella Neil Fyfe Federation Charity Golf Day 21.09.18

The Plaza Golf Society hosted the ever popular Neil Fyfe Foundation Golf day at Vistabella Golf Club with 80 players this was the largest Neil Fyfe event to date!

A collaboration has been made between the Management at Vistabella and The Neil Fyfe Foundation which with funding supplied by The Foundation aims to promote young golfers of all nationalities coming into the game from this Spanish region.

The ultimate goal being that the best of these youngsters could attend the Paul Lawrie Golf School in Aberdeen for a week long intensive coaching session.

The day itself was an overwhelming success both on the course and off with some great scoring and more importantly an astonishing €10,000  raised which a huge thank you  goes out to everybody who played and contributed to the brilliant total.

The Neil Fyfe Trophy, presented by Neil’s father Steve, was won by Patrick O’Dowd with 43 huge points followed by Mike Thornton with 42 points and Ricky Cowan  in third on 41 points.

There were plenty of other winners on the day with 18 nearest the pin prizes, 2’s pot and a raffle but without doubt the biggest winner was The Neil Fyfe Foundation and everybody associated with it.

The Plaza Golf Society within the event ran its usual Gold and Silver categories with the following results:-

Gold won by Mike Thornton with 42 pts, Ron Temple second with 37pts and third Lee Holtham on 36pts.

Silver won by Patrick O’Dowd with 43pts, second Ricky Cowan with 41 pts and third Richie Maher on 40pts.

The handicap committee will no doubt be catching up with these ‘on form’ players!

Plaza GS back at Villamartin

Today The Plaza Golf Society returned to our spiritual home Villamartin Golf Club. Spiritual being an apt word today as we also said goodbye to a very close friend to many of us. Bruce Webster sadly lost his long and painful battle with cancer. RIP old friend we miss you already.

On to more cheery news! There has been some discussion about the name of our famous society with a number of people suggesting we rename it “the vertically challenged society” due to our large number of erm smaller members…. We have decided to stick to the original. Thanks.

We had 50 players today with some really good scores, some average and then there was Janice Holtham with her measly 15pts, strangely she did not make it back to The Ale House to pick up her wine so ‘Fat Cat McAllen’ has added this to his extensive collection. NTPS again sponsored by The Ale House and were won by Kev ‘9 Fingers’ Bird x2, Keith Crowley, Mark Parry and Kev Adamson.

The ‘former radio 1 DJ’ Gary Davies was the best guest with 37 pts off his 6 hcap, the interestingly named Bob McKeegan Brown!  was 2nd with 35 pts and young Toby Davies 3rd with 33 pts. Debbie Rose was once again the best Lady and the 2’s pot of €100 was shared by 9 Fingers himself, Keith Crowley and the vertically challenged pairing Mark Parry and smiling Neil O’Cheeseman.

So into the main events.. Gary Gates came 3rd in Silver with 32 pts, Barry “the mouth” Mitchell was second with 35 pts and Neil O’Cheeseman fell on one with 38 pts! There was a now familiar name once again appearing in the Gold division ‘Dodgy’ Declan Crowley came 3rd on countback with 39pts off his 9 hcap, Andy “pass me the fake tan “ Shaw was 2nd, and the overall winner was the affable ‘oirishman’ Graham McClarke with 41 wonderful points off his 4 hcap! There’s gonna be some serious snipping of handicaps going on today!

Next week we are at La Finca which is now sold out. Please book all your future games online at www.theplazagolfsociety.com

The Plaza Golf Society  Visit El Valle for the Final date of the Season

On this very warm spring day the TPGS ventured down to the wilds of El Valle for what was to prove to be a tumultuous final day of the season. Liz Sully won the overall for the day and the Silver division with 33 pts Chris Baker and Lee Holtham 2nd and 3rd.

The Gold division was won by Declan O’Crowley with 31 pts just pipping wee Tony Small on countback with dodgy Darren Hancock coming in 3rd. The Eclectic which was a culmination of best scores over the season at Villamartin  was won by the now familiar name of Liz Sully who romped in with 58 pts, Curly Wilson was 2nd with 54 pts and Gordy Brindley and Lee McWilliamson joint 3rd with 53 pts.

There was only 1 winner of the 2’s pot new member Tony Sims he also featured twice picking up to NTP’S along with Christian O’Latewood and Kenny McPherson. The best guest was Tony Sims with 36pts  (clearly one we need to keep an eye on!) Someone we don’t need to worry too much about is Bob Price who came last with 18 pts Frankly embarrassing!

The season long Order of Merit concluded today in 8th place Darren Hancock 168pts, 7th Liz Sully 182pts, 6th place Dickie Allen 184pts, 5th Tony Small 202pts, 4th Ronaldo Temple 212pts, 3rd Simon Lee 218pts, 2nd dodgy Declan Crowley with 219 pts but the overall winner was big Phil de Lacy with 220pts a really close and hard fought competition well done all!

We start all over again on Friday 11th May at Hacienda Requelme please book online at www.theplazagolfsociety.com or pop into our local The Ale House at Villamartin Plaza.

Today the TPGS visited a very windy La Finca,  the course was as usual in excellent condition but the weather made it very difficult to play.

The best lady was won by Margaret Woodall with 15pts, the best guest was Tom Cornwall with 25pts and the worst score was Gordi who came in with 11pts as usual he gets to enjoy a fine bottle of wine.

Phil de Laceup continues his fine run of form with 30pts but Kevin O’Bird was a clear winner of the gold division with 32pts.

Our next game is Captain’s Day on Feb 9th at Villamartin which has completely sold out. Please check out our website www.theplazagolfsociety.com for future fixtures.

Today the TPGS played at our favourite course, Villamartin. We had 44 playing with 2 reserves! A great turnout again.

The greens where fast and tricky, and the tee boxes where virtually all on the white blocks. This resulted in some very average scoring! A big  shout out to Cam McHardy  who secured the last place and a bottle of wine with a woeful 8pts  and 4 of them were on 1 hole ! 😂. Best Lady Liz Sully.

Winning guest James Freeman who plays off Plus3
