Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 9.3.20

With a very respectable 43 points, Pat Cassidy and Petina Murray took the honours in Monday’s 2 ball better ball. Close on their heels, with 42, were John Shervell together with Hendrick Oldenziel.

No fewer than 28 of us lined up for Wednesday’s Stableford. Alan Douglas took the glory with a modest 34 points and behind him, on countback with 33, was his wife Olga and Lindsay Forbes (beware the injured golfer)!

Three ‘2’s today which went to Ken Robertson (again), Alan Douglas and Peter Shervell.

For those of you who may be wondering how I’m getting on with ‘Camera Club’ I managed to delete 35 landscape snaps before I got them onto the computer!

With 88 points it was Nick Campbell alongside Reg Akehurst and John and Ellen Drakesmith who laid claim to the ‘Glitter Ball’ in Friday’s 1-2-3 Waltzer. With 85, in the ‘Dance Off’, were Graham and Petina Murray together with Pete Dunn and Paul Brown.

It could well have been Richard Connock who once said, ‘I may well be the only golfer never to have broken a single putter; if you don’t count the one I twisted into a loop and threw into a bush.’

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 17.2.20

It was two scores to count out of four (but all on the par 3’s) for Monday’s game. Our winners, with 101 points, were Petina Murray, Donna Campbell (making a guest appearance), Nigel Price and Terry Field (who probably won’t be making a guest appearance anytime soon).

Wednesday and it was another dreaded ‘Medal’ round. Mind you it didn’t seem to phase Benedicte Kruse as she took 1st place with an impressive nett score of 68. Hot on her heels were John Dobson with 74 and Graham Murray with 75. Just the one ‘2’ today which was recorded by Dave Pulling.

I did at one point ask my playing partner, John Shervell, ‘What do you think of my game? and was somewhat disappointed when he replied, ‘It’s very good but personally I prefer golf’.

Friday’s format was the ever popular, but not often played,  ‘2 ball Texas Scramble’. With a fabulous score of nett 63.75 (only 1.25 off our all-time record) were Lindsay Forbes and Joyce McClusky. Lindsay also happened to be in that record holding team back in 2016. Second spot, with a nett 65, went to Dave Pulling and our new Swedish friend, Haken Fagerstedt.

We’re all looking forward to next Wednesday after the draw was made today for a Presidents v Secretary’s singles match play competition. Watch this space!

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 10.2.20

Monday’s competition was a ‘2 ball better ball’ (high and low) and our winners, with 45 points, were Friedel Knebel together with Petina Murray. Just to confuse you Friedel also came in third place, with Nigel Price, with a score of 44!

The serious business of determining who would be this year’s club Champion began on Wednesday. Played over six rounds of Stableford (with the best four to count) Nora Betts staked her claim with an incredible 45 points.

In second place, with 39 points, it was that man again Friedel and much to my surprise, I came in third with 38 points.

This week’s pearl of wisdom comes from none other than Ben Hogan who once commented, ‘The most important shot in golf is the next one’.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 3.2.20

It was a game of Change Partners (golfing partners that is!) on Monday and taking 1st place, with 88 points, were Benedicte Kruse, Hendrick Oldenziel, Pete Dunn and Nigel Price.

There were some very good scores in Wednesday’s Stableford competition despite the wet conditions. Top of the list was Paul Brown with an excellent 42 points. He was followed closely by Richard Connock on 40 and in third place it was Ron Luffman on 38 points. Three ‘2’s today going to Benedicte, Richard and Graham Murray.

Friday and it was a warm welcome back to our former President John Wheeler. To ring the changes we played ‘Greensomes’. Played in pairs, both players tee off, choose the best one and after that the ball is played alternatively.

Richard, alongside Nora Betts, took the title with a nett score of 65.5. Just 0.5 behind them were Dave Pulling and Lindsay Forbes. John Dobson and Paul Brown claimed bronze with 66.5. A very enjoyable format although John Wheeler and Mick Bretnall might argue that as they scored 15 the 4th hole!

This week we have a great insight from a certain Henry Beard who observed, ‘When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.’

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 20.1.20

‘Storm Gloria’ got the better of us on Monday as no-one was daft enough to play so I’m afraid there is nothing to report.

Things cleared up considerably on Wednesday and what should have been a five clubs and a putter competition was changed to a Stableford. Three ‘2’s today, with Richard Connock, Hendrick Oldenziel and Ken Robertson in the money. Winning on countback with 36 points was Richard who was followed by Benedicte Kruse. With 34 points Olga Douglas took 3rd, which was some going as she only scored 11 on the front nine!

With 148 points Friday’s ‘Yellow Peril’ was claimed by Alan Douglas, Ellen and John Drakesmith together with Lindsay Forbes. In second place, on 140, were Dave Pulling, Mick Bretnall and Ken & Liz Robertson.

This week’s quote is attributed to Robert Browning who remarked, ‘The trouble that most of us find with the modern matched sets of clubs is that they don’t really seem to know any more about the game than the old ones did’.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 13.1.20

Just the one point separated our top two ‘runners and riders’ in Monday’s   ‘Change Partners’. First past the post, with 80 points, were Ron Luffman, Nora Betts, Hendrick Oldenziel and the bookies favourite ‘Albert’.

The ‘going’ was certainly firm for Wednesday’s dreaded Medal round. With a carryover from last week, John Shervell was the only player to score a two today and so scooped in excess of 50 euro into his nose bag!

With a nett score of 71 Graham Murray had a ‘photo finish’ on countback from Trevor Pullyblank and Lindsay Forbes (despite a Fetlock injury)  had a good workout coming in third with 73.

I managed to fall before the third fence and DNF’d along with a few others from the field.

This week’s words of wisdom come from none other than A.A.Milne who remarked, ‘Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad’.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 16.12.19

Having sat through the final of ‘Strictly’ on Saturday evening I thought Monday would have been a good day to play the ‘1-2-3 Viennese Waltzer’. However someone must have viewed something they found a bit disappointing as it was the ‘3-2-1 Dusty Bin’ that was contested.

With a very credible 85 points it was Ron Luffman, Nora Betts, Mike Chapman (yawn) and John Drakesmith who took the top slot. There is a rumour going round that next year’s presentation day will be held at Mike’s house!

Santa came early for John Dobson on Wednesday as he was the only player to card a ‘2 ’in our weekly Stableford (being from Yorkshire he didn’t buy the beers though!) In very cold and windy conditions the scoring was never going to be that high and the top 3 places were all shared on just 31 points.

After countback it was Nigel Price who took gold followed by Lindsay Forbes and Olga Douglas.

Friday and it was our Xmas 2 ball better ball. Mike Chapman, yet again, was picking up prizes as he was nearest the pin on the 6th and Yvonne Phipps was closest in two on the par four 15th. With an outstanding 43 points Olga Douglas and Joyce McClusky took home the Christmas spirit.

This week’s quote has to go to our very own Dave Pulling who remarked, ‘You’d have thought by now that these trees would know I was left handed.’

There won’t be a report for next week so thanks for all your support and encouragement over the past 12 months and I’ll sign off for this year with;

Feliz Navidad para todos!

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 25.11.19

It was the best two scores from four with all to count on the par 5’s that was contested on Monday. Our winners, with 94 points were Trevor Pullyblank, Petina Murray, Mike Mahoney and Paul Brown. Just claiming 2nd place on countback, with 86 points, were Olga Douglas, Pat Cassidy, Hendrick Oldenziel and John Shervell.

There were no less than seven ‘2’s in Wednesday’s Stableford. Too many to mention but they know who they were! Graham Murray took gold with 38 points (no surprise there then) followed by Rachel Lee with 37. John Shervell, Ken Robertson, Paul Brown and, yes you’ve guessed it, yours truly, made it into the top six.

Friday and it was ever popular ‘Texas Scramble’. I’m pleased to report that many of our teams enjoyed a great deal of ‘banter’ between themselves (which let’s face it is how it should be). With a winning nett score of 60.3, John Shervell, Terry Field, Jan Svendsen together with Jan’s guest Hell Ya (Yes really!) took 1st place. Just a few shots off the pace were Ron Phipps, Graham Murray and Paul Brown with 63.1

This week’s quote is attributed to Brian Wells (who may well have had our good friend Heinz Lei in mind at the time) ‘This ball retriever is not long enough to get my putter out of the tree ‘.

Las Ramblas Golf Society – Results for w/c 18.11.19

With an excellent score of 44 points it was Benedicte Kruse alongside Marleen Billen who stood on top of the winners podium after Monday’s ‘2 ball better ball’ competition. Standing just below them were Pat Cassidy and Nora Betts who scored an impressive 42.

It was the same format on Wednesday although this time it was the ‘Memorial Pairs Trophy’ that was at stake. Again, with a winning score of 44 points, this time it was AnneMarie Weisheit and Richard Connock who took the glory. With 43, John Dobson and Phil Herrington were a close second followed by Olga Douglas and Paul Brown who managed 42 points. Four ‘2’s today with Phil Herrington getting two of them! The others in the money were Ron Phipps and Jan Svendsen.

Friday, and it was the final of our ‘Pairs Match Play Knockout’. Once again Richard Connock, alongside Paul Brown, was on the winning team having overcome Graham Murray and Mike Mahony 5& 4.

With  84 points it was John Shervell, Trevor Pulleyblank, Pat Cassidy and Rachel Lee who won our ‘Waltzer 1-2-3’.

It was a certain Jim Bishop who once commented, ‘Golf is played by twenty million mature American men whose wives think they are out having fun’.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 2.9.19

Thanks for their inspiration this week go to Berry Gordy Jnr and all the artists connected with Tamla Motown over the years.

Monday saw us compete in a 2 ball better ball competition and I heard it through the grapevine that our latest recruit Dean Tracey, together with his partner Anne Marie Weishart, must have wondered what’s going on after the rest of their team failed to turn up.

I’m pleased to report though that they recorded second spot with 41 points. Our Supremes today were Olga Douglas and Marleen Billen coming in with an excellent 46 points. My team would have fared a bit better had my partner, Dave Pulling, not had a putting lesson with Stevie Wonder beforehand!

It really was a ball of confusion on the Al Green. Graham Murray had an eventful day hitting quite a number of Drifters into the barrancos leaving his partner Yvonne Phipps, overheard saying, please don’t leave me this way.

Wednesday’s Stableford saw Four Tops (2’s) today which went to Yvonne Phipps, Olga Douglas, Bryan Neal and Rachel Lee. For Nigel Price it was a question of ain’t no mountain high enough on the first and third holes as he managed to lose his tee shot on both.

For John Shervell it was signed, sealed, delivered as he took 1st place with 35 points.  It was the same old song as yet again Nick and Rachel Lee appeared in the top Jackson Five. For myself it was a case of I wish it would rain after totally messing up the last two holes.

Olga Douglas, Graham Murray, Hendrick Oldenziel and Mike Chapman were wondering what becomes of the broken hearted, after having scored 84 points in Friday’s 6x6x6, they took 2nd slot. Dancing in the street though, with 88 points, were Richard Connock, Pete Dunn, myself and the fictional Albert. Richard was our very own rockin’ robin today with five birdies!
