Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 2.9.19

Thanks for their inspiration this week go to Berry Gordy Jnr and all the artists connected with Tamla Motown over the years.

Monday saw us compete in a 2 ball better ball competition and I heard it through the grapevine that our latest recruit Dean Tracey, together with his partner Anne Marie Weishart, must have wondered what’s going on after the rest of their team failed to turn up.

I’m pleased to report though that they recorded second spot with 41 points. Our Supremes today were Olga Douglas and Marleen Billen coming in with an excellent 46 points. My team would have fared a bit better had my partner, Dave Pulling, not had a putting lesson with Stevie Wonder beforehand!

It really was a ball of confusion on the Al Green. Graham Murray had an eventful day hitting quite a number of Drifters into the barrancos leaving his partner Yvonne Phipps, overheard saying, please don’t leave me this way.

Wednesday’s Stableford saw Four Tops (2’s) today which went to Yvonne Phipps, Olga Douglas, Bryan Neal and Rachel Lee. For Nigel Price it was a question of ain’t no mountain high enough on the first and third holes as he managed to lose his tee shot on both.

For John Shervell it was signed, sealed, delivered as he took 1st place with 35 points.  It was the same old song as yet again Nick and Rachel Lee appeared in the top Jackson Five. For myself it was a case of I wish it would rain after totally messing up the last two holes.

Olga Douglas, Graham Murray, Hendrick Oldenziel and Mike Chapman were wondering what becomes of the broken hearted, after having scored 84 points in Friday’s 6x6x6, they took 2nd slot. Dancing in the street though, with 88 points, were Richard Connock, Pete Dunn, myself and the fictional Albert. Richard was our very own rockin’ robin today with five birdies!

Por ultimo

Thanks this week go to our resident professional, Terry Field, for his contribution on ‘When to suggest major swing corrections to your opponent.’

Las Ramblas Golf Society – Results for w/c 19.8.19

With strict adherence to our rules regarding scorecards and weather conditions, Bryan Neal found himself disqualified not just once but twice this week! Having seemingly won Monday’s ‘2 ball Texas Scramble’ alongside Reg Akehurst with a net score of 66.25, it was later discovered that they hadn’t dated their card or entered the name of the game! This resulted in Geoff Biggerstaff and Terry Field being elevated into 1st place with a net 67. This was despite Geoff taking a tumble on the 8th tee and causing himself some small injuries. I thought it was a little unkind when one of his playing group remarked, ‘Where are we going to get a crane this time on a Monday morning to pick him up?’

With just 12 players braving the weather, things then went from bad to worse for our ‘Commander in Chief’ in Wednesday’s ‘5 clubs and a putter’ Stableford. His three playing partners decided enough was enough with the heavy rain (at times) and retired early thus leaving Bryan with no-one to mark his card, which consequently led to his second disqualification of the week.

Sounds harsh but I’m sure Bryan would agree ‘rules are rules.’ Wednesday’s winner was Graham Murray with 38 points. He was followed home by Mike Chapman with 34 and a very surprised Richard Connock took 3rd, with 32. There were no ‘2’s today so a ‘Rollover’ for next week! With it being just 5 clubs and a putter Mike Mahony was sweating somewhat as he normally loses at least 2 clubs out on the course!

Beating the runners up by just one point and with a total of 87 our winners of Friday’s ‘Change Partners’ were Alan Douglas, Graham Murray, Jamie Conway and the fictional Albert. Myself, Rachel and Nick Lee together with Reg Akehurst were unfortunately the ‘bridesmaids’ today.

On our ninth hole Allen McClusky says to caddy, ‘ Oooh nooo! I’m going to drown myself in the lake.’ Caddy replies, ‘Think you can keep your head down that long sir?’

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 12.8.19

With a huge contribution from our latest recruits Nick and Rachel Lee, Mike Mahony and myself found ourselves on the winning team in Monday’s ‘2 from 4 and all on the par 3’s’. With an impressive score of 105 points, we were 7 points short of the winning team’s record set back in 2016 (which Mike also happened to be a part of). I have a very strong feeling Nick and Rachel won’t be playing off today’s handicaps for much longer!

Wednesday’s Stableford provided two major surprises. Not only did Ron Percival make it onto the leader board today but he won with 41 points! Apologies for no ‘photo of Ron but his agent wouldn’t allow us to include it without payment for publishing rights. (Plus he’s a bit camera shy.)

Dave Pulling took silver with 38 and was closely followed by (our handicap secretary) Bryan Neal, who came in with 37 points. John Shervell was also in the hunt with 35 points. Bryan commented afterwards ‘that’s the first game this year that I’m going to have cut myself!’ Two ‘2’s today, one going to guest Jamie Conway and the other to Rachel Lee (yes, she had been cut 2 shots from Monday.)

The winners of Friday’s ‘Bowmaker’ were Terry Field, Ken and Liz Robertson and our guest for a few weeks, Eileen Moriarty. A great score of 114 points was enough to see them home. Of course it does help when Terry manages to score 5 birdies! Rachel and Nick Lee were in the money yet again as, together with Alan Douglas and ‘Albert’, they scored 112 points. For any of our readers scratching their heads, a ‘Bowmaker’ is played in teams of four with the best three scores to count on each hole.

Por ultimo,

Ken Robertson says to caddy ‘That can’t be my ball, it’s too old.’

Caddy replies ‘It’s been a long time since we teed off, sir.’

Las Ramblas Golf Society – Results for w/c 10.6.19

With a terrific score of 91 points (just 3 short of our all-time record), Reg Akehurst, Marleen Billen, Harry Howard and Friedel Knebel took 1st place in Monday’s 6x6x6. On the 7th hole, where it was the best two scores to count, they managed to get nine!

Wednesday’s Stableford was all a question of club selection as each player was only allowed 5 clubs and a putter. Given his equipment restriction Terry Cullen did very well to take the top slot with 38 points. Hot on his heels was Joyce McClusky with 37 and Andy McDonald managed third (on countback) with 36 points. Two ‘2’s today going to Dave Pulling and Andy McDonald.

Beating Joyce McClusky 6&5 it was Ellen Drakesmith who was crowned this year’s winner of our Singles Match play Knockout Competition (husband John took the title last year!)

In a ‘friendly’ Yellow Peril it was Reg Akehurst, Mike Mahony, Graham Murray and Andy McDonald who shared the spoils of victory. After deciphering their score card they had amassed an amazing 170 points (which was nearly 60 more than my team!) and came up just one point short of our all-time record. Also well worth a mention is Annemarie Weisheit. She managed to putt out on six holes all of which were over 25 foot!

And remember ‘Golf is a game of misses. The guy who misses the best is going to win’ – Ben Hogan

Mike strikes Gold – Twice!

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 3.6.19

It was the first of the knockout singles match play semi-finals on Monday with Joyce McClusky easily overcoming Dave Pulling 7&6. She will meet either Geoff Biggerstaff or Ellen Drakesmith in the final after they have contested their match on Friday.

It was a best 2 scores from 4 with all to count on the par 3’s for the rest of us. I reported last week that Mike Chapman was getting a lot of mentions just lately. I don’t mind naming him again now, because with a combined score of 98 points he was in the winning team again along with me, Olga Douglas and Richard Connock.

Wednesday and it was the 6th and final round of our Club Championship Stableford. Winner of today’s round, with 38 points was (yes you guessed it) Mike Chapman. He was followed by Olga Douglas on 37 and Nora Betts came in third with 35 points. Three ‘2’s today going to Dave Pulling, Ken Robertson and Nora Betts.(I think it’s more than just Nora’s hair that needs cutting!)

Taking the best four score cards into account, the winner of the Men’s 2019 Club Championship, with a score of 139 points, is Mike Chapman. Only two shots behind him was Ken Robertson and Dave Pulling took bronze with 133 points. Our ladies champion for this year, with a total of 145 points, is Nora Betts. In second spot was Joyce McClusky with 138 and in third place it was Olga Douglas with 134. Well done to you all.

Having returned from Japan, Alan Turing (aka Bryan Neal) worked his magic and not only broke the Enigma code but also calculated the results for this year’s Eclectic ‘Joker’ Stableford. With the best 5 scores from 6, the winner was (deep intake of breath) Mike Chapman! (Mike took the year off from golf in 2018 and some of us probably feel he should do so again!) Reg Akehurst had a great run and took second slot whilst Olga Douglas had another near miss and claimed third.

Ellen Drakesmith beat Geoff Biggerstaff by just one hole (managing a 30 foot putt on the last) to take her place in the final of the Singles Match play against Joyce McClusky next week.

Friday’s game was a long overdue 2 ball Texas Scramble. Our winners, with a nett score of 63.25 (just half a point ahead of the runners up) were Terry Field and Heinz Lei. Great fun!

95 points was the winning score for John and Ellen Drakesmith, Geoff Biggerstaff and Hendrick Oldenziel in Monday’s ‘Waltzer 1-2-3’. Whilst just short of the record (which stands at 98 points), Ellen in particular had a tremendous game managing to contribute 16 of those points over just four holes. Geoff also had a ‘4 pointer’ when he parred the most difficult hole on the course (the 17th). Well done to you all!

Wednesday was round four (of six) of our Club Championship ‘Eclectic Joker Stableford’. Mike Frankish made a long awaited return to the leader board, winning with 42 points. The bridesmaid again however, was Joyce McClusky with 39, just beating Benedicte Kruse on countback. Four ‘2’s today, Nora Betts, Heinz Lei, Lindsay Forbes and Alan Douglas.

After a very enjoyable lunch at El Prado in San Miguel on Thursday (where I failed miserably to read out the raffle numbers in Spanish) we moved onto Friday’s ‘change partners’. With 82 points our winners were Olga Douglas, Nora Betts (yes I know!), Nigel Price and Bryan Neal. Runners up with 76 points were Terry Field, Trevor Pulleyblank and Ken & Liz Robertson.

Por ultimo, this week’s quote is attributed to A.A Milne who once said ‘Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad’.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 4.3.19

Our week started with a bit of fun. In teams of three and all to score on each hole (it had to be explained to John Dobson that this did not mean it was a Texas scramble) everybody played from the ladies’ tees. (I could certainly get used to this!)

Taking first place, with 94 points, were Nick Campbell, Reg Akehurst and Nora Betts, beating the runners up by just one point. Your intrepid reporter also noticedtrepid reporter also notiv that Nick had got dressed in the dark as he was wearing odd shoes. Makes you wonder whose underwear he had on! In my playing group we had quite a high number of ‘Cuban’ putts (they just needed one more revolution!) which would account for our dismal performance!

Wednesday was round two (best 4 scores from 6 cards to count) of the club championship Stableford. It proved to be a double edged sword for Hendrick Oldenziel who managed to win the day with 38 points, but following an emergency summit meeting of the committee, will find himself playing back off the men’s yellow tees.

To clarify, our society rules permit that gentlemen, on reaching the age of 70, are given the option to play a slightly modified course. Usually this is decided on ability. To resume, second spot went to Tom Hardie who scored 36 points and he was the only player to achieve a ‘2’ today (so he had a few extra Euros in his sporran this week!). In third place, and much to her surprise, as her marker filled out the card incorrectly, was Annemarie Weisheit with 35 points.

On Friday we did actually play a Texas Scramble! With a nett score of 60.5 (just one more than the runners up) our winners were John Shervell, Joyce McClusky, Terry Field and myself.

Por ultimo; ‘To some, the greatest handicap is the ability to add correctly’.

Results for w/c 18.2.19

Monday’s team game was two scores from four to count but with all to score on the par 3’s. With a nice round figure of 100 points, our winners were Dave Pulling (he’s starting to make a habit of this), Nick Campbell, Marleen Billen and Reg Akehurst.

They even managed to get round the course without losing a single ball between them! (that must be one for the record book). An early contender for this week’s ‘Senior Moment Award’ has to be Olga Douglas. Now, we’ve all walked off a green at some point and realised a club or two have been left behind; but a whole buggy?

Olga was however back on the winning trail when we played the second round of our ‘eclectic joker stableford’ on Wednesday. With 40 points she just eased out Pat Cassidy who scored 39. Third place went Peter Jenkinson with 38 points. Two ‘2’s were achieved on the day, one by Olga and the other one by John Shervell.

A quick tip here from Terry Field’s Golf Manual. ’If you want to reduce your score by eight shots just miss out one of the par threes!’

Onto Friday and we played a two ball ‘Texas Scramble’. Apparently the last time this was contested was seven years ago! Terry Field and Nigel Price took Gold with a nett score of 66.75. Hot on their heels were Donna Campbell and Dave Pulling with 68.75.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 11.2.19

The week started with a 2 ball better ball. Given the original draw, it should have been a ‘high playing with a low handicap’ but some last minute changes left a couple of teams a bit unbalanced.

Our winners with 45 points were Marleen Billen and Hendrick Oldenziel, just edging out Dave Pulling and myself who scored 44. Whilst being a very commendable score it didn’t come close to the record set by John Conway and Donna Campbell last year of 53 points.

Wednesday saw round one (4 out of 6 cards to count) in our Club Championship Stableford. Opening her account, with a terrific 40 points, was Benedicte Kruse. She was followed by Dave Pulling with 34 and Ron Percival who scored 33 points. Olga Douglas carded 32 to take 4th place, just edging out Peter Radcliffe and Lyndsay Forbes on countback.

Four ‘2’s today with Hendrick Oldenziel getting two of them (one of which was on the par four 11th)! For some of our players today I was reminded of a famous old quote; ‘Golf is a game in which you claim the privileges of age and retain the playthings of childhood’.

On Friday we competed a ‘1-2-3 Waltzer’. Taking the honours with a modest 79 points (but great compared to any other team) were Dave Pulling, Tom Hardie, Nora Betts and Peter Wickham. As it was St Valentine’s day on Thursday, another quote sprang to mind; ‘When I die, bury me on the golf course so my husband will visit’.

Unfortunately Benedicte has been a little camera shy lately so you’ve got to look at ‘El Presidente’ instead!

Las Ramblas Golf Society – Results for w/c 4.2.19

Our week started with a very closely fought ‘Change Partners’. Only one point separated the top three teams! With a very modest 75 points (the record is 94 set in 2016) the winners were Joyce McClusky, Peter Wickham, the fictional Albert and surprisingly, yours truly. Joyce also happened to be in that record breaking team.

Tom Hardie was top dog on Wednesday, not only winning the Stableford with 39 points but also carding two ‘2’s. The other ‘2’s went to Marleen Billen (her first time ever) and ……..me! In second place on the day was Peter Wickham with 36 points followed by Maria Oldenziel with 35. Three players finished with 34 points, Annemarie Weisheit, Bryan Neal and Lindsay Forbes.

For the third time this week Peter Wickham was again ‘in the money’ when his team won the ‘Counter’ game. Assisted by Bryan Neal, Mike Chapman and Nora Betts they scored 100 points which is only 6 points short of our all time record!

One final thought; many a golfer prefers a buggy to a caddy because it can’t count, criticise or laugh.
