Busters Golf Society Lee Barber Memorial shield

This September our Lee Barber memorial shield was played at an old favourite of ours Alenda Golf, the course was as usual in excellent condition and a very good test of golf, Alenda has great staff great everything however due to their 2020 price structure this course has set its price possibly too high for many societies.

Nineteen players teed off for the game in very good weather conditions, our nearest the pins were, on the 3rd John Rush, the 5th along with the 12th hole  was taken by Peter List, Ray Pollock won the 16th all nearest the pins received a sleeve of golf balls

Our best front nine was won by John Rush who received a sleeve of golf balls and our best back nine being taken by Gilly Gilbert who also received golf balls our third place with thirty-three points was won by Martin Collins winning a bottle of Rioja

Our runner up with thirty-four points was Brian Ead taking home Red and white wines, but with an excellent thirty-six points our Shield winner for 2019 was Ian Allison taking home a bottle of Bacardi and a mini replica of the shield.

I have to say well done to all players, and congratulations to Ian Allison who over the past three years has managed to win all of our three trophies, not forgetting our soccer card winner who selected Chelsea, Kjell Svenson.

With three games to go in Busters 2019 season, there is a close-run now for our player of the year competition and this is when the competition starts hotting up.

Our next meeting will be at Alto Real another old favourite of ours, a course which over the past five years has improved significantly.

Busters Golf report Alicante 7th June 2019

For this months game twenty two of us returned to the Alicante campo de golf although we only played there last month, however, due to Alenda where we were booked to play this time and along with many courses being hollow tined during this month we needed to find an alternative at short notice and Alicante was available also the first-rate substitute.

The course again was in excellent condition, along with favourable weather conditions and after consuming a café con leche along with the tostadas that came with our deal we were ready to go.

After our game we returned to the Mini golf bar in Quesada for our presentation and a couple of refreshments of our choice, the outcome of the game was as follows BF9 with nineteen points and not implicated in the first three results being won by Helen Beddows our BB9 winner was Quentin Pegden with seventeen points, both received a bottle of Rioja, there are six par threes at Alicante and five of the NTPs were hit in one, the third by Tony Wilson the sixth by Helen Beddows and the eighth, twelfth and fifteenth by Peter List winning the three holes.

They all received a sleeve of golf balls for each NTP par three, in third place with thirty-five points was John Rush winning a bottle of Rioja, our second place was taken by Dave Owen with thirty-six points and taking home bottles of red and white wine , but our winner on the day with an excellent score of thirty-seven points was Ian Allison who received a bottle of Bacardi.

Our two’s competition had to be shared by three winners who were Peter List, Helen Beddows and guest Paul Manson, finally our soccer card winner with Norwich was Quentin Pegden, I have to say well done to all our winners and commiserations to the rest of us, our next months game will be held at Roda golf course.

Busters Golf Society

For this months outing, we took the short journey from Quesada to El Plantio for our monthly Stableford game, the weather conditions couldn’t have been better a soft breeze and a warm sun on our backs gave us the good weather that we came to Spain for.

I have to say what a pleasure it was to play at El Plantio again as they had just held a two-day tournament there and the course, in general, was in excellent condition giving us greens that were very slick but true, with fairways and bunkers that had obviously been looked after.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Bo Edman and Quenten Pegden as members to Busters.

Now on to our winners, our best front nine was taken by Ian Allison with seventeen points and our best back nine being won by Helen Beddows both taking home Rioja wines, our NTPs were won by hole nine Helen Beddows the fourteenth was taken by Jim Stevenson, with Ian Allison winning the eighteenth all nearest the pins received sleeves of golf balls, in third place today was David Page with thirty one points winning a bottle of Rioja  our runner-up prize being taken by Ineke Stevenson with thirty-four points winning red and white wines  but our champion for the day with thirty-seven points was Jim Stevenson taking home a bottle of Gordon’s gin, well done to all of our winners our card winner this month was guest Tony Wilson who selected Rangers.

Busters Golf Society April 2018

This month on the 5th April was our annual Alto Real Trophy competition when we competed for our trophy at the Alto Real golf course, we arrived at the course and were pleasantly greeted by Antonio and his staff who I have to say are keeping the course in very good condition.

After a coffee all twenty-four of us were geared up and ready to try to secure the Trophy the weather conditions were good and higher scores were expected but as is the norm in Spain many of the pins were tucked away behind bunkers making the shot in somewhat difficult, and points harder to obtain.

After the game we returned to our host bar close to the Quesada Arches for our presentation and were treated to sandwiches with sausages by Lisa the proprietor and her staff of the Mini Golf bar, the results of our match were as follows BF9 Rob Ashman with sixteen points BB9 Martin Collins with fifteen points best guest Kjell Svenson with twenty six points who all received a bottle of Rioja.

Our nearest the pins on par threes were won by, on hole five Kenneth Sjoberg the eighth and the tenth were taken by Terry Sharley and John Rush won the seventeenth with a tee shot that was only a couple of inches away from the pin each received sleeves of golf balls, tying in second place with thirty points but losing on count back was Stewart Lee who took home a bottle of Rioja.

Barry Grinsell also with thirty points took second place by count back having a better back nine he received bottles of red and white wine but our winner on the day was Tim Goldsmith with thirty-three points who received a bottle of Bacardi and a copy of our trophy which is a replica of the Claret Jug well done to all of our winners, our soccer card winner this time who selected Oldham was Terry Sharley.

Busters Golf Society December 2017

This months stableford  competition saw us playing at the greatly improved Altorreal golf course close to Murcia , we arrived there early in order to pay our subs , have a coffee and a rabbit before taking advantage of the practice facilities that the course offers .

This month we had five new members join who we are sure will enjoy the camaraderie that our society offers .

We returned to the Mini Golf bar close to Quesada’s arches for our presentation and as usual we were greeted with a warm welcome by the bars staff , sausage and chips with bread and butter and some of the landlords sensibly priced beers , I have to say that the course played very long today due to strong winds which always seemed to be head on making things somewhat more difficult.

Onto our presentation our N T P winners were on the fifth hole Chris Waddington the tenth was taken by Graham Ball and Jim Stevenson won the seventeenth , each player received a sleeve of Srixon golf balls , our BF9 was won by Helen Beddows with seventeen points and our BB9 with thirteen points was taken Terry Sharley both winning a bottles Rioja.

In third place with  thirty two points was Ian Allison also winning a bottle of Rioja our second place winner was Rob Ashman with thirty three points taking home bottles of red and white wine and our winner on the day was Malcolm Evans with thirty four points who won a bottle of Gordons gin , not forgetting our soccer card that helps to pay for our social functions , which was won by Brian Jones who selected ( amongst other teams ) Leeds .

As today was our last in the season the scores cards are totalled up and we take the best six cards of the year to find our player of the year , and by only taking the only the best six cards gives our overseas members a chance of taking part and winning this extra competition , our player of the year for two thousand and seventeen is Phil Pettican , well done Phil and all of our winners today .

Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of like-minded people who play on the first Friday of the month , depending on the time of the year we generally have between sixteen and twenty four players , over the four years since we first formed the society some of our original members have moved on , either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new.

So we are looking for a few more members to swell our ranks , if you are interested in joining our society ( its free) then please email me Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com quoting your phone number and current handicap and I will get back to you within a couple of days .
