San Javier Golf Society 2018 “President’s Trophy”

Pairs better ball competition at La Serena on Wednesday 20th June:

Many thanks to our illustrious President, Mr Barry Butterworth for hosting his annual trophy competition at La Serena. Barry provided all the silverware and prizes and a full capacity turnout demonstrated the esteem in which he is held by the members of the society. Well into his 80’s Barry still plays regularly with us and his trophy is always keenly contested by the membership.

Perfect weather and the course at La Serena being (as usual) in great condition, led to some excellent results. The winners of the 2018 President’s Trophy were Ty Williams and Paul Newman with 49 points, second were Adrian Sinclair and John McCay with 48, third were Bob Gallard and Dave Farrington with 38 and fourth came Ian Price and Danny Scott on 46. Nearest the pins were won by David Archer, Dave Farrington. Gerry Frame and Barry Beale.

The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will roll over to our next game. We have several upcoming games, the details of which can be seen on the calendar of our website. Full details of games will be emailed to all members.

San Javier GS – Roy Herbert Memorial Trophy

This report is regarding the San Javier Golf Society Inaugural “Roy Herbert Memorial Trophy” individual stableford qualifying competition at La Serena on Monday 7th May:

A full turnout as expected for this new event on our calendar, to commemorate our ex captain and long-time member Roy Herbert, who was much loved and is very sadly missed. Roy’s widow Linda donated the trophy and the prizes to the winner and runner up and was on hand to present them afterwards. She herself was presented with flowers by our president Barry Butterworth on behalf of the society.

There were some very high scores returned, most notably and very fitting, by Mick Hardy (a good friend of Roy).

The winners on the day were: in Division 1 First was David Archer with 40 points, second Paul Newman with 35 and third was Paul Matthews with 31. In Division 2: First came overall trophy winner Mick Hardy with 42 points, second Paul Hamlin with 39 and third Kev Parker with 38. In Division 3: First John McKay with 35, second Dave Farrington with 30 and third John Hillier with 29. Nearest the pins were won by Dave Furze, Paul Hamlin, Kev Parker and Sandra Twentyman. The Monkey was “won” by Chris Taylor. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will roll over to our next game.

We have several upcoming games, the details of which can be seen on the calendar of our website. Full details of games will be emailed to all members. San Javier Golf Society Captain’s “Drive-in”

We had a great turnout and perfect weather for the start of new Captain Dave Farrington’s tenure. Ably assisted by new vice-captain Ty Williams, Dave made sure the event ran smoothly and a great afternoon of golf was enjoyed by all.

El Valle was in superb condition but only one person played below their handicap – fittingly that was our new captain! The winners were in Division 1: First was David Archer with 33 points, second Paul Newman with 30 and third was Les Whall with 28. In Division 2: First came new captain Dave Farrington with 41 points, second Tony Mann with 33 and third Mick Hardy with 31. In Division 3: First Shaun Devine with 34, second Jeff Belt with 30 and third Joyce Armstrong with 25.

San Javier Golf Society “Individual Stableford Qualifier”

Vistabella, on Wednesday 21st February:

Our first visit to the new 18 hole layout at Vistabella and the almost unanimous verdict was positive. The new 7 holes still have quite hard fairways and the tee boxes are very sandy but things will improve in the coming months.

Vistabella in general has very difficult but true-rolling greens, which contributed to a very low scoring day for most people (except Jenny O’Neill…..well played Jenny!).

The winners on the day were: Division 1: First was Paul Newman with 31, Second – Ian Price on 31, Third – Paul Matthews with 30.

In Division 2:  First was Kev Parker with 33 points, Second – Danny Scott on 29, Third – Mick Hardy on 28. In Division 3: First was Jenny O’Neill with 40 points, Second – John Hillier on 34 and Third – Jeff Belt with 32. Nearest the pins were won by Jim Moffatt, Mark Pollitt, Danny Scott and Barry Beale. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was won by Dave Furze and the monkey was awarded to Steph Brooke.

Our next competition is an individual stableford qualifier for “Captain’s Day” at La Serena, teeing off at 12:32pm on Monday 5th March. This is our final qualifier for the prestigious society flagship competition and this year it is an extremely close situation in both the mens and ladies sections. Full details will be emailed to all members.

Payday will be on Saturday 3rd March in the bar area of La Serena Club House, between 11:00am and 12:00.

For further information on our society, to play as a guest, or to join, please phone Barry Beale on +34 649 245 889 or look at our website at www.sanjaviergolfsociety.co.uk and Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sanjaviergolfsociety

San Javier Golf Society “Captain’s Charity Day” competition.

La Serena Golf, on Monday 5th February:

As usual we had a fantastic attendance for our annual Captain’s Charity Day at La Serena Golf. This year’s charity was HAH (Help at Home), chosen by Captain Paul Hamlin and what a very worthy cause it is! It was a great day’s golf with some superb performances but the real winners were HAH, with a donation from us of 400 euros after the game.

Massive thanks to everyone involved in organising, donating and helping another successful San Javier Golf Society event, with special mentions being due to our committee and to La Serena Golf Club for their help and generosity. You can visit the HAH (Help at Home) website at www.helpathome.es

Winners on the day were: 1st place and winners of the Captain’s Charity Trophy: Steph Brooke and Less Whall with 70 points, 2nd: Ian Price and Frank Murphy with 65 points, 3rd: Peter Ashton and Ty Williams also with 65, 4th: Jim Moffatt and Daz Hancock also with 65 and 5th: Richard Lovering and Wayne Williams with 63 points. It’s worthwhile pointing out that all the above winners (without exception) donated their winnings back into the charity pot!

Nearest the pins were won by David Archer, Richard Lovering, Les Whall and Frank Murphy. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will roll on to our next game, which is an individual stableford qualifier competition at the new 18 holes layout of Vistabella Golf, teeing off at 09:00am on Wednesday 21st February. Full details will be emailed to all members.

Lo Romero Golf, on Wednesday 24th January:

Another “full house” for a great day’s golf with the society at the fabulous Lo Romero course, which looked a little odd due to the iconic 18th island green being drained of water from the surrounding lake for maintenance.

San Javier Golf Society “Individual Stableford Qualifier” – Alicante Golf

We always enjoy coming to this lovely course in the centre of Alicante and today was no exception, despite the occasional rain shower and thunder rumbling in the background! The course was in super condition but the scoring showed that most people found it quite difficult, with only one person playing to their handicap.

The winners on the day were: Division 1: First was Paul Matthews with 36 points, Second – Paul Hamlin with 32, Third – Mark Pollitt with 32. In Division 2:  First was John Hillier with 31 points, Second – Dave Furze with 26, Third – Joe Flanagan with 26. Nearest the pins were won by Paul Hamlin, Jim Moffatt, John Hillier and Mark Pollitt. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will carry over to our next game. Our next game is a “Roll Up” at Lorca Golf, teeing off at 11:00am on Monday 30th October.
