Around and About the Golf Courses

Following on from previous articles below you will see an update on activities and problems at a number of our local courses:

Campoamor

The course re-laid all 18 greens over the summer months and the results are disappointing to say the least with only 9 greens open in poor condition and the other holes on temporary greens and with the cold winter months ahead of them there is little sign of a quick improvement.

La Torre and Saurines

Both of these courses are still closed after the storms of September followed by those in November and there are suggestions that Saurines may never re-open.

Mosa Trajectum

There are rumours in the golf industry that they are working on the site of the original golf courses with plans to re-open 9 or 18 holes.

New Sierra Golf

Early work has commenced on the 2nd 9 holes and the initial plans are for the holes to be complete in October 2020.

Vistabella

The golf course is now well established but visitors to the course can see development work taking place associated to the new clubhouse and again it will be October 2020 before the work is finalised.

La Marquesa

Badly damaged by the storms of September and November while in the process of changing the course layout and a number of new greens the are still only 9 holes open but there are plans to fully open up all 18 holes in early February 2020.

Font Del Llop

There has been substantial work on the 9th greens and surrounding water course and green side bunker costing €100k and it will still be some months yet until the work is finalised and until then a provisional green is in place.

We will keep you updated over the coming months in respect of all the above courses.

Happy days are here again?

For those of you that follow these golf articles you will know that I have explained on numerous occasions that our Spanish golf course hosts all operate a ‘seasonal pricing policy’ which means that prices of green fees rise and fall throughout the year with March, April, May, September, October and November typically being the high season prices and the other months being the low season periods when prices are at their lowest.

The good new is that from the 1st December 2019 the winter low season period kicks in so fill your boots while you can.

Try and get golf booked in December because as from the 1st January 2020 all the local courses will increase their prices, including the low season prices and you can expect to see increases of 7%-8% on many local courses.

You may be tempted to book directly on line with the courses because their web-page prices look attractive but be aware that these are not usually the course prices but those of an internet booking organisation and the prices that you initially see are not those that you pay because they add their commission at the bottom of the transaction just as you are about to pay and exit the transaction.

After you add their commission and high credit card charges their prices are usually higher than many of your local agents.

Why not support your local agents who have invested a considerable amount of time and money to support you all year around rather than a ‘faceless’ business operated out of an office Madrid or Barcelona.

Flag in or Flag out??

In recent articles we have described the numerous changes to the R&A rules of golf for 2019.

These rule changes include the removal of a penalty for hitting the pin when on the putting surface and so now the player has the option to putt while on the green with the flag in the hole and of all the rule changes this is the one that appears to have caught the interest of local golfers.

As a low handicap golfer my higher handicap society partners consistantly ask me which is better, flag in or flag out and there is no single answer to this because it is a matter of personal preference.

This issue has raised it’s head on the main PGA tours and for instance Bryson Dechambeau has decided that his preference is to leave the flag in the hole for all putts.

Me personally for very long putts I choose flag in because I find it easier to gauge  the distance to the hole with the flag in position but for shorter putts I take the flag out because to my eye this makes the hole appear bigger.

I always remember a saying that my father used to say when I was a junior “a flag in never helped a good shot”.

So you can see there are arguments for both options and I am sure that each player will work out which is best for them.

In conjunction with the flag in,flag out debate the new rules encourage playing ‘ready golf’ which is only good for the speed of play BUT I have noticed an increased number of occasions where my higher handicap golfers are ‘moving’ while fellow players are trying to play or even hitting shots while other players are in the process of hitting their shots.

Remember that the previous rules of etiquette still apply in that you should be still, quiet and out of eye line when someone is playing a golf shot.
