This months trophy game took us to Bonalba, one of the furthest journey’s on our yearly calendar, but the weather was good and the traffic not too bad, as was the course, although we have seen the greens in better condition. We had 24 players and there was a lot of scores returned over 30 points so the day went well. The results were as follows;

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s were Michelle Evans who also took the two’s pot with a lovely shot into the green which left a very short putt, Jim McCarthy (2) and Chris Waddington. Nearest in two shots was Mike Thomas, best front nine Mike Thomas (20) best back Terry Brooker (19). The silver division winner was Jeff Evans (38), and the gold and overall winner was Walter Miller (38).

Back at O’Briens where the presentation took place Terry Brooker won the football card.

Our next outing is Captains day which is being used to raise funds for the Poppy appeal and is fully booked with 32 players. If anyone wishes to play with us or needs any further information please email rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

The fixture was held at Vistabella where the course played well and the weather excellent, there was some very good scores returned with several over the mid 30 points.  A small slip up by one of our lady members took 6 burly golfers and a lot of raking to put right, luckily there was no damage caused.

Results on the day were, nearest the pin on the par 3’s were Chris Waddington and Michelle Evans (3). Nearest the pin in two was Nigel Wright, best front nine Rob Vaughan and best back Nigel Wright.

2018 was an excellent year for us with 50 or so assorted fun and trophy games, and culminating with our Christmas dinner held at Stan and Ollies which was attended by 54 members and their partners.

Presentation of the player of the year awards were given out during the evening with Theresa Wright being the runner up and “keeping it in the family”, husband Nigel taking the top spot.  And although our next Player of the year trophy games do not commence until March we are continuing to play competitive games every Friday.

The year started at Vistabella on the 3rd of January with Alex Bolten coming out on top with an excellent 40 points and an immediate handicap cut. Our next game was at the always good Alenda which was won by Martin Collins.

The weather continued to be kind to us and our next game at Altorreal was won by Vice Captain Dave Johnson. A fun game of texas scramble followed at Roda with the winning team of Captain George Marshall Dean, Dave Johnson, Helen Bailey and Theresa Wright taking the honours in this one.

Altorreal followed, and with a very good score of 38 points Ray Batey won this fixture.

With a variety of winners and some excellent scores so far, this years trophy games are looking to be very competitive. We travel to Bonalba for our next fixture on the 15th of February, anyone wishing to play this, or any other game with us should contact at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk.

Bonalba was our destination for this months trophy and poppy day game, Today the toughest contest would be against the wind, it was awesome, everyone tried not to hit the ball high because if we did it would either finish up behind you or it was gone.

The course was in reasonable condition and it was quite warm so the contest was on. Every one enjoyed the battle but it was hard work.

The results were as follows;

Nearest the pin on the par 3’s were  Alex Bolton, Buck Taylor and Barry Grinsell. Best front nine Roy Wilkinson and best back was Martin Collins, The silver division winner was Theresa Wright and the gold division and overall winner was Nigel Wright.

Back at The newly named Raso Rooms ex Rayz Bar we had a buffet and the presentation, we also had a collection and a couple of football cards in aid of the Poppy appeal, all the winners today donated their prizes to this cause, including the vouchers donated by Fantasy golf, so these will be carried forward to a future game.

All in all we raised 160 Euros which will be presented to Mick the Grip for the Poppy appeal.

Our trophy game took to El Plantio the course and the high temperatures were the winners. With the greens quite difficult and some of the fairways a bit bare this led to some average scores with the exception of one of our ladies who smashed it and made it look easy.

Best front nine Theresa Wright, best back Andrew Evans, one put that did go down was from Kevin Hufton who won the two’s pot. Gold division winner was Dave Johnson, and silver division and overall winner with 36 points was Helen Bailey.

Back at Ray’s bar on El Raso we had the presentation and some nice tapas, thanks to Angus and his staff, and Steve Bramhall won the football card.

Ruby’s Golf Society at Valle Del Este

Our now annual pilgrimage to Valle Del Este took place during the last week in May and as usual the trip was terrific value, great camaraderie, and good fun for all of the 42 of us that made the journey.

Day one is always a bit of a rush, with booking in etc, but we all managed to assemble on the tee for an afternoon Texas scramble which was good fun and also a good introduction to the members that had not played there before. The winning team for this competition was Robert Scott, Bill Malcolm, Michelle Evans and Dave Shelton with 59.8 points which was a good score.

Day two, 16 players (gluttons for punishment) went off to Marina Golf at Mojacar to play a different course, this stapleford competition was won by Dave Wright.

Day three, 28 players played for the Valle Del Este trophy which this year was won by Steve Craven on countback. The non golfers in our group also had a great time around the pool, visiting places of interest and shopping of course !

The purchase of the weekend was made by Mal George who bought a six foot raffia cactus, promptly named it Manuel and carried it around for the rest of the day, much to every ones amusement, in the evening we had a pairs putting competition which was won by Barry and Karen Wingate.

The weekend culminated with our final night fancy dress party, the theme of which this year was “Jungle” (see photo) All in all another great friendly weekend, great companionship, great golf and of course a little bit of drinking.

Rubys Golf Society in memory of Ivie Davies

Vistabella hosted Ruby’s golf society for this important day in our calendar.

We played a Ryder cup format, where the captains team was pinched against the vice captains team, we also had buggy pairs, nearest the pins and some other challenges so the day was very busy.

The course was tricky but played well and some very good scores were recorded.

The results were; nearest the pins on the par 3’s Bill Peters, Ray Batey, Bill Malcolm and Ian Allison.

The best individual score was an outstanding 43 points from Ray Batey which will earn him a large handicap cut I am sure, the two’s pot was shared by Nigel Wright and Bill Peters. Best buggy score was Ray Batey and Nigel Wright, but the main event of the day was the team event, and although fairly close the Captains team took the honours and lifted the huge trophy which was kindly donated by Vistabella golf.

After we had all replenished ourselves with a meal and a few drinks the presentation took place followed by an Auction which raised €300 for the cancer charity AECC. A great day sponsored by Vistabella golf and supported by Ruby’s golf society in memory of our former member Ivie Davies.

Our Trophy game this month was just a short hop down the road to the newly formed Vistabella golf where the greens as usual were tricky, and care had to be taken on the fairways which are a bit sparse and patchy on holes 2 to 8. However the course is now a great challenge but despite being Friday the 13th the challenge was accepted by all and some great scores were recorded, the results are as follows;

Nearest the pin on the par threes were David Johnston, Nigel Wright and Martin Collins. Best front nine and also best score for a long time was George Marshall Dean, best back was Theresa Wright. Silver division and overall winner on the day was Buck Taylor, Gold division winner was Martin Collins.

Back at Rayz bar where we enjoyed a nice buffet the football card was won by Dave Johnston.

Our next Trophy game is at Fonte Del Llopp on the 27th May anyone wishing to join us for this or any other game please email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk
