The Celts Club de Golf.

Last Sunday we celebrated our May Championship game.  The tournament was agin well supported with over 80 players.  The competitions committee on the day were marshalled by Philip Mountford who had drafted in Kenny McGeehan and Jane Knight to assist with the absence of Camillus and Terry who are back in Ireland for communions.

Well done to all.  The course is presented in immaculate condition although the greens are just a tad slow. To the staff in the pro-shop, jean and Jose, thank you for your attention to detail and for preparing the cards and collating the results. Gloria, Maria and the Vanessas  and all the kitchen staff well done as always, we were treated to some lovely tapas, thank you.

Our club captain James Hayes was on hand to present the prizes, James is feeling a little under the weather and we wish him a speedy recover. James again made the point of thanking all the organisers and all those who stayed for the presentation to honour those good enough to win a prize.  As it is Jim’s big day next month maybe we could all wear the club polo.

Results of the day, the NTP’s Carmel McShea, John Doyle O’Brien Sally Hopkins, Bob Smith and James Hayes.  We had one Crystal event during the month and the  winners were, Kevin McBride 44, second Anthony Davis 42 and third Richard Nicol.

The Monthly medals went to, Cat I Pauvla Serakova 69, Cat II Gordon Montgomery 71 and Cat III  Terry Welsh 38 Just a little note, I do not keep track of those who collect your prizes on your behalf if you are not present Cat. We are really making good progress in relation to slow play again might I suggest that players please keep up with the group in front of them. Do not wait until it is your turn to play to start your routine, putting on or taking off your glove, marking and cleaning your ball, selecting your club, measuring your distance for your shot etc. all of these can be done in advance and this will help the smooth flow of the game.

We have a waiting list in operation at the moment for membership at La Serena, however membership of The Celts is always available. If you would like information on joining our club or entering a team in any of the federation events why not send an e-mail to johnobrienalicante@gmail.com or call 615466398?

To Wayne and his team, the course was presented as usual to a very high standard and the new putting green is taking shape nicely.

Our club captain James Hayes was on hand to present the prizes. James again made the point of thanking all the oreganisers and all those who stayed for the presentation to honour those good enough to win a prize.  His previous suggestion of wearing the club polo was a major success as the majority of the field donned their shirt.  It did look quite impressive especially on the course.  Next month we might get the remainder to wear their shirt.

Results of the day, the NTP’s Terry Fitzgerald, Tommy Warren, Karl Di Mascio, Chris Daw, Mike Banfield and Terry Jones.  We had one Crystal event during the month and the  winners were, Harry Lee 38, second Sally Hopkins 38 and third David Lock 37.  Just a little note, I do not keep track of those who collect your prizes on your behalf if you are not present, so please don’t ask me as I don’t know.

Do not wait until it is your turn to play to start your routine, putting on or taking off your glove, marking and cleaning your ball, selecting your club, measuring your distance for your shot etc. all of these can be done in advance and this will help the smooth flow of the game.

As we presented our Memorial Day prizes and marked the occasion with a minute silence for deceased members, I would like to inform our members of the sad passing of two golfers who many of us have `played against in the International League, Mick Vessey of Benidorm Amigos and Kevin Grenier of El Valle GS, may they rest in peace.

Could we be aware of a number of issues that we might address in order to improve the experience for all in a tournament, firstly the issue of slow play. Can players please keep up with the group in front of them.

Do not wait until it is your turn to play to start your routine, putting on or taking off your glove, marking and cleaning your ball, selecting your club, measuring your distance for your shot etc. all of these can be done in advance and this will help the smooth flow of the game. We had two more players disqualified on the day, one for not presenting their card and one for no signature.

It is your responsibility to have your card signed and return it to the tournament director.

The Celts Club de Golf at La Serena

We celebrated our April Open Day at La Serena last Saturday.  Thank God we seem to have seen the back of the poor weather.  It was a breezy day which added to the degree of difficulty for one or two of the holes.

The green-keeping staff have to be congratulated on their ongoing course maintenance and improvements.  Well done Wayne and all your team.  The staff in the pro-shop have everything working like, a well-oiled machine, thanks are due to Bruno, Paul, Jose and Karolina for their professionalism.  Again, to Camillus, Philip and Terry, I am running out of superlatives, keep up the good work, it really is appreciated by the members and guests who literally have to turn up on the day and enjoy their golf.

Unfortunately, we had two players who went home with their cards in their pockets.  If you fail to return your card you cannot have your handicap adjusted and it also delays the presentation of prizes.  One player last month went home with the winning score, it is difficult enough to win a prize but to go home with a winning card!

A special thanks to all those who stayed back to show their appreciation of the hard work carried out on their behalf and to applaud the winners who were present to collect their prizes.

Terry our Captain was on hand to present the prizes for the month; Crystal 1st John Coholan 41. 2nd Tony Head 40. 3rd Camillus Fitzpatrick 38.  Week 2.   Medal. Cat I. Geoff Ellender72.  Cat II. Gareth Conroy 37. 2nd Andy Currie 36. 3rd Tony Head 35.  Best gross went 77 John O’Brien.  2nd overall Alan Proudfoot 39.  The overall winner with the fantastic result of 40 points Mark Knight.   Well done to all those present who help make the day special.

Our Captains’ Terry Fitzgerald prize 26th of May, can you get your name down as soon as possible?  Please send an email to confirm your reservation for dinner.  Guests are welcome to the dinner 15 euro?

The International League in Valencia.  We have a weekend away in Valencia 16-17 June.  Itinerary, bus leaves Torrvieja Sat morning, golf El Bosque Saturday, dinner in the clubhouse Saturday night.  Golf El Saler Sunday.  Bus transfer between courses and return journey Sunday.  Approximate cost 125 euro.

Can those teams who wish to travel by bus please, please give me your names and 20 euro deposit as soon as possible?  When the bus fills it is too late.  We have a waiting list in operation at the moment for membership at La Serena, however membership of The Celts is always available.

THE CELTS CLUB DE GOLF.

In sweltering heat last Saturday we celebrated our Captains’ prize (Mr. Alisdair McLean) tournament at La Serena.  I would like to thank Alisdair for his contribution to our club, he has been a model captain always lending his support to all our events.

It was our sixth annual event and how rapidly the years have gone. We had a field of 92 players all anxious to rise to the challenge and claim the prestigious title.  The morning began bright and early with the drive in at 8.30 before the first players set off.  Needless to say it was a fine drive and set the mark for one of the later prizes.

Scoring was particularly high, with no fewer than 15 players equal or better than par.  I would like to thank the staff in the pro-shop for their usual professionalism to Jose, Jean and Paul.  To Wayne and all his team for the excellent condition of the course, thank you.  An event such as this takes many months of planning and it is very important to acknowledge the role played by the members of the junta directiva.

To Camillus Fitzpatrick ably assisted by Philip Mountford many thanks for all the hard work.  To our treasurer Denis McCormack who does a sterling job managing the accounts and making it possible to purchase such an array of prizes.  Through prudent management the competition is subsidised by The Celts club and the entry fee for the day was only 10 euro. This covered golf, prizes and dinner in The Sunrise restaurant.

Down to the presentation of prizes. We had four sections, one for the visitors and three members’ categories.  The visitors’ section winner was Adrian Cunningham with 33 pts.   The NTP’s were collected by Sue Owens, John Aitchison, Steve Baron, Steve Carter, John O’Brien and Andy Currie.

The special prizes, nearest the Captain’s drive went to Eileen Hudson who was absolutely thrilled as this was her first ever prize.  The longest drive went to Alan Proudfoot.  Category 3.  1st. Giovanni Butto 39, 2nd. Roy Sutherlan 39, 3rd. John Coholan 39. Category 2.  1st. Sue Benning 40, 2nd. Darren Holden 37, 3rd. Laurence Brennan 37.  Category 1.  1st. Tony Head 37, 2nd. Pauvla Serakova 36, 3rd. John O’Brien 33.  The gross was won by Camillus FItzpatrick with 32.  The overall runner-up Nigel Brandish with 40 and the winner of the Captains’ prize, Roy Ramberg. 41pts.

A special mention must go to our senior golfers as similar to the current holder of the Presidents prize Roy has celebrated more than 75 years.  There is hope for us all yet.
