El Plantio2 Golf Society

A pleasant morning greeted the members of El Plantio 2’s Golf Society’s weekly club competition. Seven players competed in a Joker competition with a twist.

The two Joker holes chosen in the round carried double points as usualbut a Yellow Ball was issued for use on these holes.

If this ball was not returned, a penalty of three points was levied, which happened to one unfortunate player.

Nearest the pins – Hole 1, Alistair Douglas, Hole 4, Graham Blakeway.

Second place, Handicap 11, Paddy O’Brien – 38 points on C/B..

First place, Handicap 7, Alistair Douglas – 41 points.

If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses – the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities.

The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact David Swann on 865 779 983 or 648 476 752.

Eight members competed in El Plantio 2’s Hidden Partners on Tuesday 4th, June.

This is a game where you can have a brilliant round and still not feature in the winning places due to your Hidden Partner not performing similarly. This happened to 2 of our members, who scored quite well but were unfortunate to draw partners (who shall be nameless), who performed less well. The winning duo did so by virtue of a superior last nine of 35 points to 33.

Nearest the pins – Hole 2, Alistair Douglas and Hole 5, Graham Blakeway.

Second place, Alistair Douglas, Graham Blakeway – 69 points.

First place, Ray Housley, Paddy O’Brien 69 points C/B.

Despite a warm atmosphere and clear skies, a strong blustery wind made life difficult for the eight competitors in El Plantio 2’s end of month medal competition. Overcoming the conditions was the least experienced member of the society, Maggie Edwards. Indeed the Edwards family nearly had a clean sweep with husband Brian claiming both nearest the pin prizes.

Nearest the pins: Hole 4 and Hole 6, Brian Edwards.

Second place – Handicap 7.2, Alistair Douglas – 58.8 shots.

First place – Handicap 19.6 – Maggie Edwards – 57.4 shots.

El PLantio2 GS by David Swann

An unfortunate late withdrawal due to the golfers bane, a bad back, left a slight imbalance of entries for El Plantio 2’s ‘Texas Scramble.’

Instead of an ideal 5 x 3 members, one team were at a disadvantage having to play with only 2 team members. After a late start due to frost on the course, the teams experienced ideal conditions. The competition winners took advantage of these, scoring a gross four under par with no bogeys and four birdies, which, I think, is a record low score for 3 players.

Nearest the pins: Hole 1 – Helen Beddows, Hole 4 – Rod Loveday.

Third place – H/C 5, Alistair Douglas, Benny Jorgensen, Allen Robinson – 49 shots.

Second place – H/C 5.2, John Wilby, Rod Loveday, Brian Edwards, 48.8 shots.

First place – H/C 5.5, Helen Beddows, Barry Walthall, David Swann – 45.5 shots.

El Plantio2 Golf Society

15 members and 1 guest played a Yellow Ball competition on May Day.

Four teams of 4 players were given one yellow ball to use and each individual doubled their Stableford score when the ball was in their possession. However, should this ball be lost, either in the water or over the fence, five points were deducted from the team’s total score.

Conditions were much better than recently, which accounted for the fact that 75% of the yellow balls were returned. The downside was that the May Day holiday brought many people on to the course as the 18 hole course was closed as it was staging a tournament and play for some, was very slow. The team finishing second scored very well individually and could even overcome the fact that they were the ones to lose the ball.

The winning team all scored over thirty Stableford points each to win by 7 points. As only four teams competed, prizes were only awarded to the first two teams.

Nearest the pins – Hole 2, Ian Henderson and Hole 6, Garry Needham.

Second Place, John Burke, Ronnie Campbell, Mike Davies, Lyn Young – 154 points.

First Place, Ian Henderson, Alistair Douglas, Gary Needham, David Swann – 161 points.
