El PLantio2 Golf

Illness and absences still tend to limit the numbers for El Plantio 2’s planned Joker competition. This time the 12 entries meant a team competition was changed to a Pairs Joker with 6 pairings of 2 players. The standard of play varied wildly with the winners finishing a massive 38 points in front of the sixth place.

Nearest the pins:Hole 4 – Rod Loveday, Hole 6 – Alistair Douglas

Third place – Alistair Douglas, Ken Green – 64 points.

Second place – Alan Janes, Barry Walthall – 70 points

First place – Brian Coupe, Chris Linathan – 71 points..

If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses – the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details. Anyone who wishes to play in the Society as a guest or join as a new member, contact Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230.

El PLantio 2 Golf Society – Gordon Abba Trophy

Unfortunate withdrawals due to Dentist, Holidays and Cruises left the turnout for the Gordon Abba Trophy less than ideal. 11 members made up the numbers for the Trophy donated by Gordon, who unfortunately (for us) returned to the U.K.

The competition was played on a Medalford basis with the Stableford score on the back nine holes being deducted from the Net Medal score from the front nine holes. Despite my scoring a total of 4 birdies, the consistency of Alan Janes, who scored 12 pars and 6 bogies, was sufficient to win on count back.

Nearest the pins – Hole 1, Graham Blakeway – Hole 4, John Burke.

3rd Place, Graham Blakeway, Handicap 9 – 9 points.

2nd Place, David Swann, Handicap 10 – 8 points.

1st Place, Alan Janes, Handicap 7 – 8 points on C/B.

El Plantio 2 compete for the Ray Baptiste Trophy

The Stableford competition on Tuesday, 8th May was for the Ray Baptiste trophy, donated in his memory by his wife. Ray was the former owner of Greenlands Golf Course and one of the founder members of what was to become El Plantio 2 Golf Society. Very much to the fore in this competition were new members Barry Walthall and Alistair Douglas.

Barry went away with 3 prizes – 2 for his second place and one for nearest the pin and was proud of the fact that he did not fail to score on any hole while Alistair won the competition on Count Back by virtue of a superb back nine of 22 points. John’s 36 points would have been good enough to win the trophy (for the third time) on most occasions.

Nearest the pins – Hole 2, Barry Walthall and Hole 8, John Wilby (nearly hole-in-one). Third Place, Handicap 6, John O’Brien – 36 points. Second Place, Handicap 23, Barry Walthall, – 38 points. First Place, Handicap 14, Alistair Douglas – 38 points on C/B.

If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Lost Balls galore at El Plantio 2 GS

It was a case of lost balls galore, either in the pond on the 3rd and 7th holes or over the fence on the 3rd hole, as a blustery wind greeted the 14 competitors for the dreaded (for some) Monthly Medal on the 24th April.

Again conquering the conditions and the competition was serial medal winner Ian Henderson, recently returned from an illness enforced absence. Also to the fore was new member, Alistair Douglas and also Henry Mellor, in his last game before returning to the U.K.

Nearest the pins – Hole 2, David Swann and Hole 8, Ian Henderson. Third Place, Henry Mellor, Handicap 8.9 – 61.1 shots. Second Place, Alistair Douglas, Handicap 14 – 60 shots.

First Place, Ian Henderson, Handicap 7.1 – 56.9 shots.
