La Marina Golf Society – Las Colinas Stableford Competition

We arrived at this fabulous venue, and one of every golfer in Spain’s favourite courses, with some cloud and a gentle breeze. With a full compliment of 24 players we all enjoyed a sunny day, but with the breeze increasing during the round.

The Gold Division winner was one of our Scottish contingent Phil Gill with 31 points, the Silver Division was won by Iain Lyall with a good score of 39 points, considering the wind.

The nearest the pins went to Tim Ruse, Gill Ludkiewic with Elspeth Craig collecting the remaining 2 !

The 2 ‘s pot was shared between Tim Ruse, John Brastock and Elspeth Craig. Many thanks to Paulo and Nikki for looking after us at the Sport’s Complex after our game.

Our next game is on Thursday 27th June for the President’s Cup and will be played at Lo Romero. The entry sheet is on the notice board at the Sport’s Complex in La Marina Urbanisation.

A sunny morning with a chilly wind greeted us at the excellent Alenda course where we played for the much coveted Committee Trophy.

Prize are awarded for the best three scores and in third place,on count-back ,with 32 points was Ray Hill. Second place went to Captain Bill Stobo with 35 Stableford points, but the overall winner with a magnificent 38points was relative newcomer Alistair Quin.

Serial winner Bill Stobo took two of the nearest the pin awards ,with Elspeth Craig and Iain Lyall completing the picture.

The Twos Pot will roll over as,despite several hard luck stories , nobody managed a birdie on the par threes.

Our next meeting is at Font Del Llop on 18th April, first tee 10.00 at a cost of 50 Euros. List is on the board at the Sports Centre, or contact Alan on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk.

Our  first visit of the year to BonAlba resulted in a glorious day weather wise ,but the same could not be said of the scoring which, for the second competition running ,produced well below average returns.

However, some members did perform well ,and top score in the Gold section went to Captain Bill Stobo with 32 points.

In the Silver section the award went to octogenarian Bill England with   a magnificent return of 35  points. Like a good wine he seems to improve with age!!

Nearest the pins went to Geoff Ettridge, Jeff Boardman ,Danny Divers and guest Paul Hayward.

The TWO’S pot was shared by Danny Divers and Alex Leach.

Many thanks to Helena at the La Marina Sports Centre for providing us wth Paolo’s tasty homemade pizza and fries after the game.

La Marina Golf Society

A large group of 32 players met at La Finca Golf to play in a Stableford competition. It was our first visit as a society in several years and whilst we found the course in excellent condition, the speed of the greens and the blustery wind made for a difficult round for most people.

Gold winner and the only player to break 30 points was Steve Warner with 33 points. A considerable achievement bearing in mind it was his first round since breaking his leg last year.

Silver winner with a score of only 27 points was Ray Hill and his look of surprise told the story of the poor scoring on the day.

Winners of the NTP’S were Barry Thorogood, Will Green, Gill Ludkiewicz and Bill STOBO with Barry Gill and Bill sharing the 2’s pot.

The prize giving was held at the La Marina Sports Centre before the excellent Burn’s Night  Supper and congratulations go to those who organized the event and most of all to Jeff Wiszniewski ,the Master of Ceremonies ,who held his audience spellbound with his address to the Haggis.

Our next meeting is on February 7th at Villamartin at a cost of 50 Euros, first tee 10.12. The list is virtually full so if you wish to play please contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk asap.

Our next social occasion is the Valentines Night on 14th February. Please contact IAIN LYALL on 966 39 3203 or 634 326 451 for further details.

La Marina Golf Society New Year Trophy

We met at the well-prepared RODA course on a freezing cold and windy day to play for the first trophy of the New Year. One member was heard to comment that it was the worst weather he has encountered for golf in Spain. However, despite his comment John Lywood managed to score 32 points and win the Gold division quite comfortably.

The Silver division and, of course the New Year trophy, went to Social Secretary IAIN LYALL with a superb score of 39 points.

A NTP also went to John Lywood with Alex Leach winning a NTP and the 2’s Pot. The only other NTP went to Danny Divers.

Congratulations to Bill STOBO on his appointment a Captain and his selection of Geoff Ettridge as Vice-Captain.

Our next game is on January 24th when we shall be returning to La Finca after a gap of several years. The sheet is very full so please approach Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk if YOY would like to participate.

La Marina Golf Society @ Las Colinas

We arrived at this excellent course to be greeted by an overcast sky and a fierce freezing cold wind. However the afternoon saw the clouds disappear and the sun appear.

The results were dominated by outgoing Captain Elspeth Craig and her better half Alan, Elspeth taking the Silver award with 39 points ,two nearest the pins and two shares of the 2’s pot. Alan took a nearest the pin and a share of the 2’s pot.

The Gold section obviously found the conditions hard going as the winner ,on countback, with only 29 points was John Brastock.

The last NTP was won by Alex Leach and Tim Ruse took the last share of the 2’s pot.

Sadly we heard the the news of the passing of one of our founder members,Eric Edwards who,as a former Royal Marine, sponsored an annual trophy. Our condolences go to his wife June and his family.

Our next meeting is at RODA golf on 10th January 2019, first tee 10.06 at a cost of 40 Euros. List is on the board at the Sports Centre or contact Alan on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk.

La Marina Golf Society Mike Barber Memorial Trophy

A slightly overcast but warm day welcomed a full compliment of players to Alicante Golf , for our Texas Scramble event . A few members braved the elements with shorts and were rewarded with the sunshine as the day progressed.

All of our players were resplendent by proudly wearing their poppies in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, with many thanks to Mick Reeves for providing poppies and items for prizes for the winners. The teams were all very enthusiastic to achieve the accolade of winning the trophy.

The runners up were Aidan Byrne, Pat Whelan, Roy Harris and Geoff Ettridge with a credible score of 62, but were pipped to the post by the winning team of Garry Garbett, Louvain Smith, Gerard McCabe and Jeff Wiszniewski with a score of 60.1. Only 2 nearest the pins were won out of 4 by Bill Stobo and Garry Garbett even though the gent’s tees were further forward than normal.

Well done to all the winners and many thanks for your continued generosity in support of the Poppy Appeal, the total is still to be confirmed. Thanks also goes to the Sport’s Complex for our after match sustenance.

Our next meeting is at Altorreal on the 22nd November, the first tee time 10:30 am at a cost of 40€. Entry sheet is on the board at the Sports Complex or contact Alan Craig, secretary on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk.

La Marina Golf Society Captain’s Challenge

A beautiful day saw our return to BonAlba where the prizes were thinly spread amongst the participants.

The Captain’s Challenge was decided by adding the Stableford points accumulated on 4 allotted holes and this was won by John Brastock and his gross score of 37 points also enabled him to take the Gold award on countback from serial NTP winner Gary Garbett who took 3 NTPS. The other went to stalwart Geoff Ettridge.

The Silver award went to Iain LYALL with 34 points.

The Twos pot was shared between Gill Ludkiewski and (again) John Brastock.

Our next meeting is Captain’s Day at El Plantio on 25th October when we will be playing the short course first and then 18holes on the main course. Please let Alan Craig know as soon as possible if you wish to play and if you wish to attend the dinner in the evening.

Many thanks to Helena for the after match food.

La Marina Golf Society

We visited Vistabella for the first time since the course was extended to 18 holes and judging by the scores returned many members will advocate a quick return. We were blessed with a cooler day with a welcome breeze.

In the  Gold section the winner was new member Gill Ludkiowicz with 31 points and ,with a handicap of 18 , she is a welcome addition to the Society.

The Silver section was an extremely close run thing ,with Tim Ruse ,Gerry McCabe and Elspeth Craig all scoring 40 Points. However ,on countback, Captain Elspeth won the day.

Overall scoring on the day will prove much work for the handicap secretary.

Tim had consolation in winning a NTP and the 2’s pot, with other NTP’S going to Colin Yarnton and Alan Craig.

President’s cup competition – La Marina Golf Society

Very warm weather welcomed us back to Lo Romero , as always in immaculate condition, resulting in some heavy scoring , especially from our lady members.

This competition had been won twice in its short history by Sarah McCabe, but this year she had to settle for second place with her 39 points, having been eclipsed by captain Elspeth Craig’s excellent 40 points, helped by two perfect putts from the fringe. In third place with a very creditable 38 points was John Milton.

Nearest the pins went to Garry Garbett, Graeme Buchanan , Sarah Mccabe and Alan Craig.

The 2’s pot was shared by Sarah McCabe (again ) and Garry Garbett.

Prize giving took place during the evening at the la marina sports club when we were served an excellent 3-course meal by Helena and her staff.

Our next meeting is at Roda on July 5th , first tee 10.00 am at a cost of 40  euros with buggy.  List is on the board at the La Marina Sports Centre or contact Alan Craig on a100ac@yahoo.co.uk.
