Golf Course Review – El Valle

The El Valle Golf Resort is located in a natural park area situated near to the Sierra Carrascoy Mountains and to many the resort is considered to be the ‘jewel in the crown’ for the GNK Group.

To find this wonderful course from the North take the A7 motorway in the direction of Murcia then take the A30 junction in the direction of Cartagena as far as the exit for the C-3319 Murcia-San Javier highway and after approx 10km you will see signs for the El Valle Resort.

From the South take the AP7 motorway in the direction of Alicante but take the exit (782) for the C-3319 signposted Murcia/Balsicas and after approx 10km you will see  signs for the El Valle Resort to your right and simply follow the directions to the main entrance.

The clubhouse is excellent with a large restaurant with terrace overlooking the courseand good changing and shower rooms and a well appointed pro-shop.

There is a large practice area with small chipping green and putting green located near the first tee.

Without doubt El Valle is one of my favourite courses in Murcia and although set in a ‘desert’ setting with numerous rocks and caves all around Jack Nicklaus has incorporated features from many courses that he played during his illustrious career with raised undulating greens with run off areas reminiscent of those seen at Augusta and many US Open venues and in Scotland.

The greens are some of the fastest  greens that I have putted on in Spain, with a superb surface and this reminded me of my ‘youth’ playing the superb Beau Desert Golf Club in the Midlands which has been the venue for British Open qualifying for more than 20 years. El Valle is a golf course that is not a test of ‘big hitting’ consisting of 18 holes with a par of 71 of 5,634 metres (6,197 yards) from the yellow tees.

Rather than rely upon length this course focuses attention on the players ‘imagination’ and shot making skills and with a strong emphasis upon good course management with the actual landing areas on the greens, being relatively small due to the run off areas on the edges of the greens.

Golf Course Review – Bonalba

This course was designed by Ramon Espinosa and was opened to the public in 1993 and is located just outside Alicante and is just a short distance from the beaches of San Juan.

To find this course ravelling from the South take the A7 motorway and pass through the tunnel and take the first exit signposted for Mutxamel and Jijona and follow the signs in the general direction of Jijona and after approx 2km take the exit signposted for Busot and Bonalba. After entering the urbanisation turn right at the large roundabout and the clubhouse is located after approx 600 metres on the right.

The clubhouse is excellent with a large restaurant with terrace overlooking the course, good changing and shower rooms; well appointed pro-shop plus for the non golfers there is a swimming pool and spa. The practise facilities are just outside the clubhouse with two putting greens plus two practise nets

This is very much a true golfer’s course which is a genuine par 72 championship layout of 6,367 metres (7,004 yards) from the white tees and a handicap slope of 132 which indicates the level of course difficulty.

The course designer has incorporated water hazards, numerous dog-legs and undulating fairways and greens in his plans which ensure that you do not just ‘grip it and rip it’ but need to plot your way around this course. The front nine holes of this course have three of the five lakes in play and the locals refer to the stretch of holes from hole 6 to hole 9 as ‘Amen Corner’ with stroke indices 1 and 3 included in this group of holes.

The back nine incorporates a number of dog-leg holes and the 12th hole is particularly interesting because they have positioned a tree right on the correct line and length for a good tee shot. The par 5 15th hole and par 4 16th holes in particular need well positioned drives to give good birdies opportunities BUT stray off line and you have a card wrecker on your hands. If you are visiting the region and looking for a challenging game of golf then pay this excellent course a visit.

Golf Course Review – La Serena

The La Serena Beach and Golf Resort is located close to Los Alcazares and within a short 10 minute drive from San Javier airport. The main feature of the course is the 500 year old Torre del Rame, which I am informed was originally built as a watch tower for pirates from North Africa.

The course designer was Manuel Pinero the former Ryder Cup star from the winning 1985 team who has created an excellent test of golf with water hazards on sixteen of the eighteen holes positioned to catch shots which are short in length and with a left to right ball flight.

To find the golf course travelling on the AP7 motorway from the North leave the motorway at exit 790 and follow signs for Los Alcazares (centro). After immediately passing under the AP7 motorway, take the first exit signposted ‘camino’ and La Serena golf and follow this narrow road for approx 1km passing the course on your left and with the motorway parallel and to your right. At the junction at the end of the road turn left passing over a small roundabout and the clubhouse is on your left after approx 150 metres.

Travelling from the south also leave the motorway at exit 790 but then turn immediately right  and you will be on the narrow road to the course as described above.

The clubhouse is modern and large in size with excellent restaurant, shower, toilet, locker and changing facilities suitable for one hundred players and a well stocked professional shop.

In my opinion this is what I call a ‘Marmite’ golf course because you will either love it or hate it.

The designer has included water hazards on sixteen of the eighteen holes and additionally has strategically positioned bunkers in the ‘bail out’ areas on the opposite side of the fairway to the water hazards.Whilst this appears at first to be a golfer’s nightmare, in truth any player of average playing ability should be able to position the ball away from the trouble on the course.

If however you hit the golf ball short and ‘crooked’ to the right with a big slice you will find this course testing on the patience and costly on the pocket given the price of new golf balls.

The course opens with a difficult long 494 metre or 544 yard (yellow tees) par 5 hole, which is flanked for the whole length by water on one side and out of bounds on the other and you, will be more than happy to start your round with a par on this hole. The front nine holes do present the better golfer with some good birdie opportunities but if you get too aggressive and take liberties with the course it will jump up and bite you.

The back nine is the tougher of the two ‘halves’ and there are some ‘interesting’ holes and in particular the 292 metre or 321 yard (yellow tees) 10th and the 275 metre or 303 yard (yellow tees)  13th holes with water in front of the greens are ‘make your mind up’ holes where you can either play the ‘percentages’ or hope that ‘fortune favours the brave’ and take on the course designer and be more positive with your shot selection.

The course is usually in good condition and well maintained and is one that you should seriously consider playing when arranging your golfing trip, if you like Marmite of course!

Golf Course Review – La Marquesa

The course was designed by Justo Quesada and opened in 1989 as the Club de Golf Quesada with the name being changed in 1994 to La Marquesa Golf and Country Club and in 2010 was the first course in the Valencia region to receive the ISO 9001 award for quality and excellence.

The golf course is located only 500 metres from the edge of the town of Rojales which is best served from the AP7 motorway taking exit 740 or 745 in the direction of Rojales and then look for the numerous signs to the course.

As you would expect the clubhouse facilities include café, restaurant, pro-shop, changing and shower rooms and the course has a covered driving range with chipping and putting greens and you can hire buggies, trolleys and electric trolleys.

This course is located in the valleys running amongst the hill top urbanisation that is ‘Quesada’ and is tight in places with water hazards and out of bounds close to a number of fairways and hence caution and good course management are a necessity.

The course is a par 72 layout of 6,115 metres (6,726 yards) from the white tees and  5,971 metres (6,568 yards) and 5,098 metres (5,607 yards) from the yellow and red tees respectively. With the exception of the 570 metre (627 yard) 18th hole the par 5’s are in reach with two good shots for the bigger hitters and the par 3 holes are not overly long although finding the green and the right part of the green on the re-structured 15th hole can be difficult at times with a water hazard immediately behind the elevated and sloping green.

At first glances this course is there for the ‘taking’ but beware because danger lurks close to many fairways and greens and your score can quickly escalate and without doubt the key to success on this course is to hit the fairways.

Golf Course Review – Condado de Alhama

This is the ‘signature’ course of the ‘golf trail’ designed by Jack Nicklaus himself and each hole is based on some of the holes from his favourite courses around the world and feels very much like a ‘links’  course with rolling fairways, fast undulating greens and knee high rough in places.

To find this golf course from Torrevieja exit the AP7 motorway at junction 790 (Los Alcazares Centro) and follow signs to Torre Pacheco and then to the A30 (Murcia-Cartagena) passing through El Jimenado until reaching the very large roundabout and take the exit for MU-602 (RM-2) to Fuente Alamo and continue ahead until reaching the RM-23 taking the exit for Mazarron and following signs for Condado de Alhama and once within the resort follow ‘golf’ signs.

As of the date of this review there is no clubhouse and the pro-shop is located in the ‘Al Kazar’ commercial centre which is located some distance from the 1st tee which is where you can hire and collect buggies, trolleys and hire clubs. The course has a good driving range with chipping and putting greens.

This is very much a true golfers course which is a genuine par 72 championship layout of  6,059 metres (6,6664 yards) from the yellow tees, which tests every aspect of your game but notably the accuracy of driving and distance control. The par 3 holes are all approaching 200 yards in length and will need either a long iron or recovery club to find the putting surface. For the longer hitters the par 5 holes are all approx 500 yards in length and reachable with a few good hits from the ‘screws’ with a long carry over water which awaits any errant shot that you may hit.

If you are having a good day and the driver is ‘behaving itself’ then with a few strong tee shots there are a few birdie opportunities on a number of par 4 holes of less than 400 yards BUT a few stray drives will see your score rocket and it could also be costly in lost golf balls.

Golf Course Review – Altorreal

The pleasant golf course of Altorreal is located in foothills close to the town of Molina de Segura and only a 9km drive North West from the provincial Capital of Murcia and within one hours travelling time from Alicante and San Javier airports.

First opened to the public in 1994 this 18 hole championship course was designed by Dave Thomas who was runner up to the great Jack Nicklaus in the British Open held at Muirfield in 1966 and who has designed the local courses at Roda and La Manga  in addition to the famous Belfry Ryder Cup course in the UK.

To find this lovely course from the Costa Blanca take the A7 motorway in the direction of Murcia and take exit for the A30 towards Albacete for a few kilometres and turn right towards the Urbanizaciones  at exit 130 and you will see the course signposted and as a guide the course is only  5 minutes drive from this junction.

The large clubhouse has an upper veranda giving excellent views of the 9th and 18th holes and is fitted with glass curtains which can be closed to the elements on ‘chilly’ late winter afternoons. The café bar restaurant offers a wide variety of food and beverage at very affordable prices which is unusual because usually in Spain, the catering facilities are ‘franchised’ resulting in extremely high price levels.

In addition the clubhouse has ample parking, shower and changing rooms plus a sauna and a golf shop.As you would expect of a course of this stature the practise facilities include a driving range, putting green and a chipping green which could be in better condition.Other services include, trolley hire, electric trolley hire, buggy hire, club hire and tuition.

The influence of ‘links’ golf on the playing career of the designer Dave Thomas is evident in that the course consists of two ‘loops’ starting and finishing close to the clubhouse. This more ‘parkland’ style golf course consists of 18 holes with a par of 72 of 6,239 metres (6,863 yards) from the competition tees and  6,036 metres (6,640 yards) from the yellow tees.

Having played this course on many occasions I have come to the conclusion that it is a risk and reward course and you generally get what you deserve, if you play well you will score well and if you play poorly and hit bad shots you will be punished. In 2007 the greens on the first three holes were significantly re-designed and ‘lifted’ to eliminate flooding problems and the result is good with large sloping greens now a test to anyone’s approach shots and putting technique early in the round.

When all the building development in the hills surrounding the course is complete this will really be a pleasant place to play golf and the owners and greens staff are constantly working to improve the course.Given the undulating nature of the course the designer has used the slopes to ensure that you rarely have a flat lie and has combined this with strategically placed bunkers and water features to catch errant shots.

The water hazards have been positioned on the 1st, 6th, 9th, 12th, 13th and 18th holes to catch the miss-hit approach or lay-up shot rather than the drive. The 4th, 7th, 10th and 17th holes are all par three’s and unlike the modern trend do not rely on length but bunker positioning and green design.

For the better players there are a number of good birdie opportunities on this course but danger also lurks so you will also need good course management.Being an undulating course this may not be suited to golfer with difficulty in walking 18 holes.

Golf Course Review – Font Del Llop

Nestling in a high sided valley close to the town of Aspe is a wonderful golf course called Font del Llop, which literally translated from ‘old’ Spanish means Wolf’s watering hole.

To find this excellent golf course from Torrevieja follow the AP7/A7 motorway in the direction of Alicante and take the A31 exit towards Madrid and Montforte del Cid and stay on this road as far as the exit for Aspe (CV847).Take the exit off the roundabout in the direction of Aspe and the course is signposted on your left after 3.5km and the clubhouse itself is approx 2km from this entrance.

The clubhouse is a wonderfully restored building which used to belong to the land owner and his family and incorporates the pro-shop, locker rooms, conference rooms and restaurant. As you would expect from the pro-shop you can hire buggies, electric trolleys, pull trolleys and golf clubs. The course has good practise facilities with a driving range, chipping green and putting green.

This course was designed by Blake Stirling and Marco Martin includes five par 5’s and five par 3’s and measures 5,814 metres (6,395 yards) off the yellow tees and 4,800 metres (5,280 yards) from the ladies red tees. The course blends naturally into the local scenery and the main feature of the course is a small river (formerly used in beer production) which runs through the course and which inter-links five ponds positioned to catch any errant shots.

Although not overly long by modern standards this course has to be handled and managed well by all standards of golfer, particularly on the opening five holes which are ‘tight’ and which ‘squeeze’ you and my advise would be to put away the driver on these holes and use a small wood or hybrid club and hit the ball ‘where you can see it’ rather than letting loose with the ‘big dog’.

After these opening holes the course ‘opens up’ a little to give the golfer some relief and I particularly liked the 491 metre (yellow tees) par 5 9th hole which raises gently up hill but allows you the options of playing ‘right’ or ‘left’ of the water hazard that runs the length of the fairway up to the green.

On the back nine holes the course finishes rather uniquely with a sequence of par 5, par 3, par 3 and finally par 5 with the final hole somewhat summarising all that you have seen over the previous 17 holes and i would strongly advise that whether you are a tourist or a resident you simply must add this course to your playing schedule.
