Around and about the golf courses

Since our last around and about the golf course article we have faced the worst storms and floods for more than 100 years which devastated some local course particularly those in Murcia so it is only appropriate that we provide our readers with a full update.

Campoamor

They have re-laid all 18 greens over the summer months and had planned to re-open the greens and the course in full by the 16th October 2019 and this has not been the case with play currently on 9 greens (which are in a poor condition) and 9 temporary greens and we will keep you updated when this situation changes.

La Marquesa

The front nine holes (which were being re-modelled) were badly damaged by heavy floods and currently only the back nine holes are open for play so they offer only 9 hole rounds or 18 holes by playing holes 10-18 twice and this situation will not change in the immediate future and we will keep you updated of changes

La Serena

Although the course was not too badly affected (except bunkers as on all courses) they lost their buggy fleet and they are currently operating with a reduced number of buggies.

La Torre

There was significant damage to bunkers but the biggest problem is that after the water receded it left the fairways covered in silt and mud and the course is still closed and will remain that way until the 1st November 2019 although they are targeting the 25th October 2019.

Las Colinas

The course was not too badly affected by the storms (other than the bunkers of which 80% are now back in play) but again they lost their entire buggy fleet and while they have been successful in obtaining at least 30-40 buggies they are still operating buggies on a first come first served basis.

New Sierra Golf

This is currently an excellent 9 hole course and they have now started initial works on the other 9 holes and have plans to open these additional holes by October 2021.

Saurines

This course was probably the worst affected by the storms and floods with extensive damage to the course infrastructure and the course is still closed and will remain that way until the 30th November 2019.

Mosa Trajectum

We understand that work is taking place to re-open 9 holes but with significant changes to the original course design and will provide more information when known

We will attempt to keep you updated of any changes.

R&A Rule Changes for 2019

Golfers of all standards have been affected by the R&A rule changes introduced as from 1st January 2019.

Playing the local courses here in Spain I can still clearly see players still taking incorrect drops and waiting to play in order than ready golf BUT on the positive side most golfers have embraced the opportunity to putt with the flag in the hole when on the putting surface without the risk of penalty.

On the professional circuit, especially on the USPGA tour the new rules haven’t gone down too well and we have seen examples of players such as Rickie Fowler penalised for not dropping from knee height.

The biggest point of issue appears to be the following rule:

“You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance”.

A number of players have been penalised for infringing this rule (or how it is interpretted) resulting in almost a player revolt and the commissioner of the tour having to write to the players.

This will have some way to run and we will keep you updated with the outcome accordingly but meanwhile we still advise all players to recheck and apply these new rules of golf.

We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.

Smart Golf

This article is not about your golfing attire and wearing cashmere sweaters and fancy trousers but we are talking here about how to think your way around the golf course using simple common sense.

Too easy?

I make no apologies for this because failing to take a common sense approach to golf can have a worse impact than a faulty swing technique.

Here are just a few ways in which you can improve this part of your mental approach:

Play the first tee shot in your head

When you are driving (carefully) to the course or before you leave the practise area, visualise and play the first tee shot in your mind over and over again because when your face this shot for real you will feel more confident and should see better results.

Stick to your game plan

Before you commence play you should have a plan or strategy for each hole and stick to it irrespective of how you are playing, your score, how the opposition are playing or the state of the match.

Do not turn one bad shot into two (or more)

Golf is a game or mistakes, you will make them, accept them and do not try miracle shots to recover the situation, accept your punishment and get on with the game.

Putting a good score together

When you find yourself in a position where you have a good score going do not get too defensive, trust your swing and stay aggressive.

Use your shots

The handicapping system gives you shots because you need them so use them to the best of your ability and do not waste them by attacking pins tight to bunkers or hitting woods out of the rough to low index holes.

Play the percentages

Do not attempt shots with a high risk of failure, simply get the ball back into play as safely as possible and get the best score that you can on the hole and get on with the rest of the game.

Eliminate your disaster shots

Golf is not about how good your best shots are BUT is about how bad your bad shots are and so identify what these shots are and take lessons to eliminate them.

Pay full attention

Each shot needs and deserves your full attention so do not play any shot unless you are ready to play the shot properly.

Commit to the shot

Select the club that you feel is correct to play the shot, have no doubts about your selection, be positive and swing with confident controlled aggression.

Take the positives from your round

No matter how badly you have played or scored on the day focus on something positive rather than negative from the round and take these with you to the next game as well as trying to work on the weaker parts of your game.

You see it really is a simple and easy as that!

Changes to the rules of golf for 2019

I have recently written two articles of interest in respect of the R&A rules changes for 2019 which were well received by the local golfing population here on the Costa Blanca as the golf authorities had done little by way of information distribution themselves expecting golfers to obatin this years rule book and trawl throught it for such information.

I was contactd by an expert on these rule changes called Richard Palmer, to remind golfers of all abilities that for the correct information they should only rely on the information which can be found at www.randa.com and sited the following two examples of where slight wording and interpretation errors may result in problems for golfers:

Example 1 – “drop a ball for 2 shot penalty when out of bounds rather then play three from the tee”

For clarity this is only applicable if the committee adopts the recommended LOCAL RULE but this will certainly not be implemented in any competition play.

Example 2 – “distance for free and penalty drops remain the same but can be measured with any club in the bag except the putter”

For clarity  the definition of a club length is ‘The length of the longest club other than a putter’.

Just a couple of examples here but there could be many  more as it appears that many articles published on the internet and in popular golf magazines have such incorrect wording and interpretation issues.

The Long and Short of It

Is their one single element of the golf game where professionals and low handicap amateurs differ from the high handicap or weekend golfer?

The answer is yes.

Week in and week out you will see the high handicap golfer misjudge the distance to the flag and 90% of the time the shot will finish short of the target. Invariably, only if they hook the ball or hit the ball ‘thin’ will the high handicapper go past the pin.

The next time you visit your local golf course or play in your society, take a look at the courses that you play and you will see that the majority of the trouble (water, bunkers, etc) are short of the green.

Why do high handicap golfers have this failing in their golf game?

  1. Lack of proper preparation.
  2. Over estimation of their ability.

Let us consider these factors.

Firstly in terms of preparation, do you know how far you hit each club in your bag in all types of wind conditions and off different types of lie? The answer is almost certainly no and yet it is easy to remedy. All that you have to do is to go to the practise range and hit a series of golf shots with each club and take note of the distance that the MAJORITY of the shots travelled, ignore the one’s that you ‘creamed’ or the one’s that you ‘mishit’, but concentrate on the average.

Repeat this exercise for different wind conditions (in the face, from the back, side winds, etc) and for different lies (uphill, downhill, side-hill, etc). Now when you go to the golf course you will be better prepared and by using the distance markers and charts available, you can eliminate many of the hazards presented to you by the course architect by hitting the ball far enough to avoid them.

From the mental perspective you will also feel more confident when playing the shot and also avoid one of the worst feelings in golf, that of hitting the ball ‘out of the screws’, direct at the flag, only to see it drop into water or a bunker ‘short’ of the green.

Allied with good preparation you should also be careful not to over estimate your golfing ability. While it is good to have faith and confidence in your ability, do not expect to hit the ball ‘correctly’ all of the time. If you always judge distance based on your ‘best’ shots you will frequently be disappointed and frustrated. Allow for your slight ‘mishits’ by taking an extra club and swinging a little easier.

If is often stated that in pressure situation you hit the ball further due to the adrenalin flow but remember that for the majority of people in these same situations, muscle tension prevents you using your automatic swing and you actually hit the ball ‘shorter’ than normal, allow for this!

Follow these simple instructions and you will soon start to avoid unnecessary dropped shots due to distance misjudgement and start feeling more confident ‘before’ you hit the ball.

Changes to the R&A Rules of Golf 2019

We have written TWO recent articles about the latest changes made by the R&A at St Andrews.

Unlike most previous years where they are making subtle changes to the rules via amendments and appendices, the latest changes apply to general rules of golf used by all golfers in an average round of golf.

Without going into too much details the basic rule changes are:

Only 3 minutes to search for a lost ball, play ready golf,no penalty for hitting the flag when on the putting green, repairs of spike marks on greens now permitted, grounding a club in a hazard now permitted, grounding of a club in a bunker now allowed BUT not when playing a shot, drop a ball for 2 shot penalty when out of bounds rather than play three from the tee,no penalty for a double hit of the ball, free and penalty drops now taken from knee height, distance for free and penalty drops remain the same but can be meassured with any club in the bag except the putter and an unplayable lie can be taken in a bunker allowing the ball to be dropped out of the bunker for a two shot penalty.

Every player should be aware and put into practice these new rules.

Have you ever thought why there are so many rules and appendices to rules?

The reason is that there is always someone ready to bend and twist the existing rules to to their benefit.

Just to highlight this there are a number of short videos on facebook showing tournament professionals practising a deliberate double hit when route to the hole is blocked by a tree.

There is one last element of the new rules missing here in that the rules refer to the integrity and trust placed on the golfer.

Looks like that element of the new rules is being tested by players who should be ashamed of themselves particularly high profile tournament professionals.

The Christmas Blues

If you are now reading this article it is more than likely Boxing day and all the thrills and spills of Christmas Day will be a thing of the past and I hope that Santa Claus brought you everything you wished for,

If you are a golfer then if you were very good it was a new set of clubs but more than likely a single club, glove, shoes or that new golf ball that adds yards to your drive.

They all have one thing in common you just can’t wait for that next game of golf to use them and to help you walk off the excesses of Christmas Day.

Added to that you are in that ‘twilight zone’ time period between Christmas and the New Year when you just don’t know what to do with yourself and suffering the Christmas blues.

By this stage you have probably fallen out with ‘er in doors’ or are pretty fed up with visiting family who have outstayed their welcome.

The time is right for the ‘Great Escape’ (not the film) so why not get out on the golf course while prices are at their lowest and the courses are not too busy.
Good excuse to try out the Chrissy Pressie and walk off some of that turkey while saving money because all too soon the New Year will be with us long with increased golfing prices.

Take advantage of the deals below that we have negotiated for you.

I take this opportunity to wish all our golfing readers all the best for 2019.

Course Marshall’s

Every golf course on the Costa Blanca are currently extremely busy with golfers and will remain that way until the end of November.

Such a constant flow of golfers needs some controlling to ensure that start and finish times are maintained and that course rules regarding buggies are adhered to.

To this end the courses employ course marshall’s who are either Spanish nationals or retired brits who exchange spare time for free golf at the course concerned.

The feedback that I receive from the Marshall’s is that the bulk of their time is utilised either preventing players taking buggies into restricted areas or cracking the whip to slow golfers.

The feedback that I receive from my clients, the players, in this respect is that the course marshall’s are either extremely helpful in their role or extremely rude and un helpful, there appears to be no mid ground in this respect.

There simply must be some compromise here with players understanding the need to protect worn areas on the course and to keep up with the pace of play so that no unnecessary delays are caused to fellow golfer and the course and their marshalls understanding that the clients are customers who in many cases in high season pay top dollar to play golf and who deserve to be treated with respect accordingly.

There appears almost to be a mini state of war between the two parties and for sure no-one will benefit from this in the long term.

Remember you don’t need marshalls on an empty golf courses as La Tercia,Mosa Trajectum,Corvera and La Peraleja could confirm if still in existance because all failed to provide the customers with satisfaction.

Great Expectations

Golfers in this part of Spain fall into two categores, namely resident golfers or tourist golfers.

The resident golfer is typically of retirement age paying for their golf on a limited pension income subject to  variances in exchange rates.

The tourist golfer has probably been saving up their pennies to come on a much awaited golf holiday with pals, eating a greasy fry up each morning and getting sozzled at night.

They do however have one thing in common, they expect the golf courses that they play to be in good condition.

Feedback from my recent customers indicates that this may not be the case as the number of complaints about course conditions is increasing.

There appear to be two main reasons for this, namely heavy rains after a long hot summer and hollow tining plus the over playing of all local courses.

All local courses are bursting at the seams and while people want to play, the courses will take their money and fill the courses which get no time for respite and re-cuperation BUT there must be a balance because poor quality courses will result in the non return of golfers to the area.

The issue of heavy rains immediately after hollow tining and a long hot summer is something I have sympathy with the courses because the combination of these elements have made the putting surfaces SOFT on top and these are being CUT- UP by spikes.

However the players also have some reponsibility here because the number of scuffed greens,un-repaired pitch marks and unraked bunkers is also on the increase and this issue rests firmly with the players so how someone can complain about the condition of the courses and not conduct themselves the basic elements of course maintenance such as this is beyond me.

We all want courses in good condition but the golf clubs themselves must give the courses time to recover and filling them dawn till dusk is not helping a difficult situation and players themselves must treat the courses with respect and basically leave the course in the condition they would expect to find it in the first place.

We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.

Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions.

Last of the Summer Wine

Those lost souls amongst you that have followed and read these articles over many years will be aware that or Spanish hosts operate a seasonal pricing strategy which means that golf green fee prices vary at different times of the year with Spring and Autumn generally being the most expensive playing periods.

We will shortly exit a long and hot summer low season period and temperatures will begin to fall and we will see the usual influx of golfers from Northern Europe to the region for the Autumn and Winter months so courses will become very busy and as from 1st October 2018 all courses will be in high season with prices at their highest and they will stay that way until 1st December 2018.

Throughout the month of September prices will gradually move up to the high season threshhold as some courses make the move earlier than others.

Now before some of our older residents feel like they have to re-mortgage the house of sell the grand children to afford to play golf there are still some late summer deals still available on some courses until 30th  September 2018 so go ahead and fill your boots while you can.We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.
